why would you even need those boots? sure its nice to have double Speed Bonus for movement(after casting haste)but since boots dont increase attack and cast speed like the spell they are of minor use in a fight

Because having a party that all has double movement speed...well, it's awesome. There are 5 boots of speed. If you can get the sixth, then in ToB you can cast haste and instantaneously move your entire party across any map. Sure, it's not *that* helpful, but it's cool.
But there's no problem about killing Renal to get his Boots, if that's what you want to do, provided that you have the patience to wait until later in Chapter 6 before attacking him. You can finish off Bodhi (with the assistance of Arkanis Gath if you worked for the Thieves in Chapter 3, although that's the non-godmode version of Arkanis Gath), and then go back to the Thieves' Guildhall and kill Renal (and Aran, and everyone else in the building except Tassa) without any penalty (and without any interference from the godmode version of Arkanis).

@Gallowglass: I can't wait until Chapter 6 to get those Boots of Speed. I want them now.

I sided with Bodhi in chapter 3. I had to attack him before chapter 3 because Renal disappears if you side with Bodhi.

@Gallowglass Hmmmm in the original, overpowered Arkanis was still there in Chapter 6. I killed him in Chapter 6, but maybe that was before I dealt with Bodhi *scratches head* :/

Why is it so "plot breaking" to kill the shadow thieves before making a deal with Bodhi?

You can't kill Bodhi without their help (can't get through the blue doors)so the answer is that you have to side with her. Eat a bit of humble pie, beg her to give you passage (she wants you there anyway) even if you turned her down beforehand.

I mean she's going to be pleased if you turn up and say,
"Dear sweet kind Bodhi, I know I was a complete idiot last week when I turned down your generous offer, but to make it up to you I've wiped out those pesky shadow thieves".

    What's she going to do?
Tell Irenicus he can go without his Bhaalspawn soul cause she's feeling peeved?

This won't help anyone struggling to deal with Super-Gath, but I wanted to mention that I just Feebleminded Renal and then bludgeoned him to death, (after completing all his quests first, of course), and for some reason the guild never turned hostile on me, which meant no Arkanis. This is definitely a trick I'll be repeating in the future, because who can say no to an extra set of Boots of Speed in Chapter 2?

Feeblemind is such a great spell.

    Can't you pickpocket those boots?
I may be in minority here, but I'd rather have my plot broken, than being killed by godmode thief superman. If Guild have Gath at their disposal, why Bodhi is even a problem in the first place? Can't he just waltz into the crypt and kill them all? It would take him 10 minutes or something.
Also, @UnderstandMouseMagic makes valid point. Why Renal, and not Galen, for an instance?

There's also a set of leather armor in Saradush that gives double speed - you can loot it off somebody you have to kill anyway.

Eler Had, one of Gromnir's men, drops the Grandmaster's Armor +6. http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/Walkthrough2/items/armor.php#grandmasters_armor_6

And yes, I believe Renal can be pickpocketed for his Boots of Speed if you must have them in Chapter 2. If you have to fight Arkanis Gath, he can be stat drained into oblivion (change form to Mind Flayer, INT drain him to death, loot his corpse).

The Boots of Speed were never pickpocketable from Renal even in vanilla, you always had to kill him.

Stat drain was always kind of a pipe dream in Chapter 2 unless you're on a solo run, because it would require a level 19 sorcerer, which requires 3.375m XP. (If you want to use a mage, you need to be level 18 if you're a specialist or level 20 if you're a generalist, 3.0m and 3.75m XP respectively. And you also need to somehow get a Time Stop and a Shapechange scroll in chapter 2.)

(You could also use Haer'Dalis' sword or the Wakizashi from Joluv, but it's still going to require landing a ton of hits without getting killed by OP Assassin Superman without the benefit of Time Stop.)

Regardless, it's been patched so that Arkanis is now immune to death by stat drain, anyway. So your top options for Renal's boots, as far as I know, are (A) side with the Shadow Thieves and come back for them in Chapter 6, or (B) Feeblemind, which is such an amazing spell.
