Who made Brage go berserk?

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
Supposedly Brage's cursed berserking sword made him go berserk and murder his wife and children. However, the sword only makes one go berserk when one is in combat. So, the question is,

Who was it that sent Brage
Into a fit of murderous rage?

    He was attacked by a squirrel, the same that holds the Ioun Stone of Luck.
    The squirrel fled, of course.

    could have been a stray kobold.
    Maybe in the vanilla, the cut scene with the kobold's sneaking up on the farm house when the kid goes to play was Brag's farmhouse.

    Wasn't he captain of the guard rather than a farmer though?

    I like how some questions are left unanswered in the game. Requires player imagination.

    There are all sorts of minor incidents that a guard might run into that would put them into "combat mode." I'm not sure it matters which cutpurse, thief, malcontent, or vandal set him off.

    (Noober makes a run for it. He doesn't have to be faster than Brage. He just has to be faster than Brage's wife!)

    Nalin cast know alignment and saw that the wife and daughter were chaotic evil. That's why he's willing to cover for Brage. The whole repentance thing is just for show, they both think it was totally justified.
