Installed all the most 'challenging' mods on LoB but gameplay says otherwise - here's the WeiDU

comebackhomecomebackhome Member Posts: 254
Hi all,

If you know me - you know I like to complete the game on it's hardest difficulty possible in terms of mods + legacy of bhaal. This is a perfect mod install order in terms of compatibility. I have been experimenting with different mod orders to maximize the compatibility over the past year (sad I know) however once I encounter the first duergar group in Irenicus dungeon they are embarrassingly easy.

Here is the WeiDU log - what am I missing?

As you can see there is a combo of both Tactics + SCS revised to work at it's finest with SR/IR. I am not sure if any the prior mods could be overwriting the difficulty settings - however SCS and Tactics are the Last and Third to last in the install order so I would think not.

Any input would be great. Thanks

I never found the Druegar at the start of the game difficult, no matter how many mods. Also, you don't have Improved Illych installed (it was in the original Tactics, maybe it wasn't updated for EE yet), which is the real difficulty enhancer of the starting dungeon.

It could also be that you've mastered the game to an extent that there's no possible hard difficulty for you :p

The SCS Irenicus dungeon is easy in theory, but you only get to rest once. For players that are used to abusing the rest button, it might be rather tough.

After this much modification, the only additional difficulty would come from self-imposed restrictions!

If you often play high-difficulty runs of the Infinity Engine game, might you consider trying out a no-reload run to post in the "Maybe this time" thread in General Discussion? No-reload is one of the most challenging and exciting ways to play the game.

Looking at aTweaks you could significantly boost the difficulty chosen there - for instance if you want more challenge in the dungeon then try out the improved mephits.

In addition to no-reload you might also consider playing solo - status effects that you can pretty much ignore in a party then become lethal ...

    I like you.

Appreciation for all the input, self imposed restrictions is something I haven't thought of which is an interesting idea. Community based interaction/challenges sound fun eg solo/noreload.

Improved Illych from tactics has come up a couple times - does anyone know if this is currently available to EE/am I using an outdated non-compatible version of tactics? Mephits I must of missed thanks.

I'm currently using custom classes/kits from EE Keeper hence the wanting to increase the difficulty to extremes e.g. Assassin/mage, Dwarven defender/mage (incredible tank), Beserker/cleric, Barbarian/druid etc.

Also, my impression with Tweaks in BG1 (some of which I installed without knowing, because I didn't check exactly what BWS was doing :| ) was that some of the components make the game easier, even with SCS and LoB mode.

I was unaware of this and I will look into it, however I've completed my BG1 play-through which is on youtube but I am only interested in BG2 at the moment,

Self-imposed restrictions to SOME extent are definitely required for veteran players. It doesn't have to go as far as no-reload (which I find a bit tedious and boring because it makes me play ULTRA safe and thus very slowly), but the parameters you set are entirely up to you.

Me personally, for example, I only use class combinations available to the vanilla game (so no Barbarian/Druid, for example). I use custom characters grafted onto story NPCs, but I keep their stats to certain boundaries (usually 85 total for CHARNAME and 80 for everyone else). I also do not use summons in LoB, because the HP bonus makes them too effective at tanking in my mind. I do not abuse AI if it can in any way be avoided (though I will also be reluctant to play badly on purpose). I will not use a variety of tactics that are entirely in line with the rules but that I consider simply too powerful for my own enjoyment; examples include using Wish in combat (I do use it for the quest and things like that), using contingencies as instant-cast bombs, using Spike Trap, using Project Image, using Mislead + backstab, and a whole lot of other things that are too specific to put a general rule on and just come from my own experience. I would hesitate to call these things "cheese" or label them in any way other than "I personally don't like doing these things". This is my game, not anyone else's. My rules go.

Of course, when discussing things I do try not to assume my own interpretation too much. I fully recognize that some people enjoy doing things differently, and that it's not my place to tell them not to. I may present my opinion and make an argument why I hold it - but ultimately, that is all I can and should do. I present choices, options, possibilities. What you make of that is up to you, and I strongly encourage anyone to make choices of their own, and for themselves.

Good points made here - due to my custom classes I like to amp the difficulty up as much as possible.

    What?

Now that there are some self imposed restrictions I can take into account - are all my bases covered in difficulty in terms of modding?

Are you not using Ascension, or did I just overlook it?

I find that SCS, IR, SR, and Ascension are pretty much the core of a difficulty-enhanced game. There's minor tweaks to add here and there, and some extra content if you like - but those 4 are, to me, the absolute can't-miss essentials at the moment.

I'm not using Ascension, my understanding of it that it was more for ToB then SoA - is this correct? Agreed those are the core components to a challenging game. I was scouting out to see if there were any underground mods that I may not have heard of that could be good but then again compatibility is always an issue

Yeah, it makes the ToB boss battles actually interesting and very, very challenging.

The mod's designed to be used with SCS and BG2 Tweaks' Max HP for Every Creature (because SCS corrects creatures' stats according to their level), but it has to be installed before those to work properly.

Hmm. As an added difficulty, before installing scs, you may modify a text file of the mod to increase enemy spellcasters level as much as you want. Give all enemy spell casters +5 levels, and it should make a difference. In the installing it will increase all enemy spellcasters levels and give them new spells as appropriate to their new levels. Careful, though. A lowly nameless bandit mage enemy can slaughter the entire party with a triple skull trap trigger, then, if it gets to be 14th or higher level.

Especially if you also have hlas as special abilities+all enemy mages/clerics get hla in soa+maximum spawns always (including liches!!!)...that game won't be easy to play. Go to Shadow temple at level early teens and face two liches with +5 levels who throw every hla and some atweaks enhanced demons at you. Couple it with LoB I really don't think it will be easy to beat, if at all possible.

If you want a new challenge, get Improved Anvil mod. It is the toughest mod by far but you should get it as alone. Its v6.2 is compatible with ee, last I hear. You should forget about the scs and item/spell tweak mods if you install IA. Quality wise it is worse than SCS but offers some really, really powerful enemies. A different mindset and approach is needed to play that mod, though. Look at the forums over blackwyrms if you like.

Like @Grondo and some other said there are still some mods to boost your personal challenge.

If this is still too easy: Play solo! Still waiting for a challenge? Also switch no-reload on! You are getting continually bored even now? Play with a level 1 char! You have already done all of this? Maybe you are godlike! :D

There are no end of restrictions you can use to keep things interesting. A few I've tried for instance:
    - a mage that can only ever cause death by melee.
    - completing the game no-reload in the shortest possible game time (without exploits).
    - completing the game no-reload in the shortest possible real time.
    - a fighter that can only kill anything using the cursed berserking sword.
    - completing the game without ever taking any damage.
    - completing BG1 without getting any XP (annoyingly you get given quest XP for Sarevok's death even if you don't cause that, so it can't quite technically be done).
    - never buying any equipment.
    - using no potions.
    the list goes on ...

Or how about trying multi-player for a different type of experience? Or perhaps a party composed of all the same character classes?

I almost never use any potions beside healing ones, not because of a restriction but Actually because I forget about them.

@comebackhome Erm.. if you like playing on the "hardest possible difficulty" how come you do not have Zyraen's Miscellaneous Mods

It is a must for me everytime I play, it removes cheesy overpowered items and makes them more reasonable (e.g no more one hit killing a dragon without a saving throw lol)
