Thanks bob_veng for your support. As far as some of the others here, it is of course not me who is being disrespectful. I was attacked for my post by several people who offered nothing useful to the discussion, and only tried to tear me down. If anyone should be reminded of the rules of conduct, it is them. I did not list my video game “credentials” to be arrogant. I listed them so that it should be better understood that the reason why I am saying that killing the dragon is impossible on throne of Bhaal difficulty is not simply because I am a novice and do not know what I am doing in a boss fight. I wanted to illustrate that I had lots of experience and yet I still find this fight impossible. The reason that I that I said I would not believe someone that said they defeated the dragon without proof is because I do have a lot of experience with game boards and the minute you say something is impossible 20 people pop up to say they could do it in their sleep, and 19 to them are most likely lying in order to look big. Is my intent better clarified now, or does this warrant further attack?

I find it very odd that a protection from poison scroll which says it protects from all forms of poison magical and non-magical will not protect you at all from green dragon breath which says is poison damage in combat, when a protection from fire scroll will protect you from red dragon breath, and a protection from cold scroll from white dragon breath, etc. There are no druid or cleric spells either that protect from poison oddly enough, only neutralize it after afflicted. If it is not a bug, I feel that a protection from poison scroll should protect from green dragon breath as other scrolls protect from other dragon breath. In D&D green dragons are one of the weaker chromatic dragons, but here because there is very little that can protect you from their breath they end up being one of the tougher ones to beat.

Justtravelinthrough: I did not consider the harm spell. This is one reason why I posted this missive, that people might suggest things that I possibly missed. If it can by-pass the magic resistance of the dragon it might work, because there is no time to cast lower resistance spells due the severe amount of damage caused by the dragon’s breath. However, and this is probably why I never thought of it, I never use the harm spell because I feel it is overpowered and it feels like cheating. To be able to reduce something with godly h.p. to almost nothing with one spell is too much. If I can find another way to beat the dragon, I will try it first.

Yes, I know, I know. I'm quite unbeatable. Never lost a fight once. Sometimes it can be a pain being such a renowned swordsman. You know, people making challenges, women throwing their underpants. But what can a man do? If you're born with a skill, you may as well show it off.

I think that speaks to the game boards you are usually frequenting. Many of us around here are more mature and have been around this game since it was first released.

    It could be. ;)

The only thing I can think of is the movie Dragonheart. And it wasn't even a dagger, but an axe! Surely I am not the expert you want for this job people :p , but it'd be nice if someone figured it out. That is, if it isn't just from a really crazy Beamdog's D&D session :)

Edit: Ooor wait. King's Quest? It has to be!

Of course it wasn't you, because calling people you want help from "liars" of course isn't disrespectful. Of course!

@fenrirwolfsborn Agreed. Harm is cheesy as Gouda and does indeed bypass MR.

Other than that I agree with @argent77 that there is need for clarification as to what protects from poison effects as well as damage and what from the effect only. It's a shame that the items that do offer all-round protection are all found only later on in the game. Maybe altering the scroll would be a good decision, game-design wise.

By the way, Cavalier is another class that facilitates this fight greatly: Not only do you get their ThAC0 and damage boost, but they have poison resist (damage and effect as well), which also allows for cheap Cloudkill tactics.

...what can I say? I'm a cheese person when it comes to games.

Just managed to kill Morentherene on Legacy of Bhaal difficulty - Viconia did it all by herself with a Slay living spell (ok it took a few reloads until the dragon missed his save vs spell...)

I'm trying to remember how I beat him on my second try. I think that the party ran outside as the spells arrived. Outside healed the party and re-entered. It was then a straightforward battle as there were no subsequent super-powerful attacks. I also had a Cavalier which probably made the battle easier.
Sorry but I've forgotten the details. I remember that I did spread out the party to minimise the effect of area spells.

It's not so hard if you prepare several Scorcher & Heaven wands for it, attack in-between rounds, repeat, it will go down within 2-3 rounds, what's left notable are young green dragons, beware they breath poison fire too.

I still prefer throwing dagger instant kill though, so cool this way. Wonder why bullet can't kill it, especially after the description of Arla's Dragonbane already states :" Legend speaks of the diminutive Arla using this sling to place a well-sharpened pebble through the skull of a green dragon in mid-flight"

Took me a couple times on LOB but doable, probably toughest fight I had and alot of planning and dead NPCs but winnable for sure...she and her wyverns have patterns, beginning of the fight is the worst depending where you decide to attack from...I used alot of choke points.

You sure it was the poison? Her script says she uses Death Fog(acid) and Incendiary Cloud(fire) too.

    I found something interesting too...
"You throw the dagger at the dragon and strike it in the heart. Death for the dragon is instant."

It seems throwing a dagger at her while she sleeps is an instakill. Anyone tested this?

    @TheGraveDigger
Seems one of these will do the trick:
    HasItemEquipedReal("dagg05",LastHitter(Myself)) // Throwing Dagger
    HasItemEquipedReal("dagg11",LastHitter(Myself)) // Boomerang Dagger +2
    HasItemEquipedReal("dagg25",LastHitter(Myself)) // Throwing Dagger
    HasItemEquipedReal("bddagg04",LastHitter(Myself)) // Throwing Dagger +1

Not sure why an dagger would do the trick and not an arrow or something too.

Oh yeah it works, so I guess I'm teh cheata, liar or whatever. Thanks for that :(

This did not work for me with a +1 throwing dagger, but did work with a throwing dagger. And thank god for that because I was like, this is dark souls but Im not making progress. So thanks alot!

Ideal would for it to be ONLY killed by bullets from that sling.

@HarpyProductions it only works while she's asleep. Once she wakes up you'll have to kill her the old-fashioned way ...

also, just to add, that blasts you see as breath weapon are not done by Morentherene, but by "young green dragon" (smallest of all reptiles in the cave). I attacked and killed Morentherene before he has shown, and (naively), with all my characters alive and healthy, under haste, I thought I will go and clear the cave - the blast cought me by suprise :) I had to run, heal and return to wipe up the little wyrms :)

When the dragon woke I hurled two fireballs (I play with me as warrior, sword and shield, long sword specialisation, Minsc, Dynaheir (first fireball), Savan as thief (fire arrows +2), Viconia as priest (she casted wand of heaven on dragon) and that Drow sorceress, new to game, I forgot his name (second fireball)

Before fight I casted protection from fear (Dynaheir), haste (male Drow), and I had only two scrolls of protection from poison, I casted them on main character and Minsc (he had +3 greatsword). My character had +2 longsword. They both gulped a potion of cloud giants strength (strenght 23), they both had boots of speed and after fireballs hit, they run to dragon and started hitting. Immidiatly Dynaheir casted breach, and male Drow another fireball - the dragon casted stoneskin, but it was removed by breach (dragon also tends to heal himself, and later haste, but I usually eather die or kill him before his haste)

I never realized about dagger so I never used it. I like to plow my way trough the game with brute strenght :) I am playing on Insane
Also, I am 44 years old and Baldur's Gate is my favorite game, I playe all four of them once per year, so, I guess a lot of experience :)

While we are on the subject, I always wondered who woul dwin in VS fight, my Icewind Dale 1 party or my Baldur's Gate 2 party :) BG2 is favorite for sure, but my ICW1 party was made from people all with +92 stats and tough as nails :)
  • I would wager that killing the dragon with just a dagger is a direct reference to how Smaug was killed in the Hobbit. If you remember, Smaug was otherwise impenetrable save for one scale that was missing near his heart. Only a precise hit by the bowman resulted in Smaug's demise.

Of course it could also be a Star Wars reference on attacking the Death Star too, so who knows.

@Qwerty1234_3to20 Of course this is a recurrent theme in literature: somebody relatively weak defeating somebody or something far more powerful. We think of David and Goliath, William Tell and the like. The list is endless particularly in real life: Quiite recently Poland against the USSR and Ukraine against Russia. Israel against the Arab alliance in the six days war etc. etc.

This subject came up just as I was about to announce the death of Morentherene in the No Reloads thread. Talk about timing!

Once more I used a dagger. In my last run it failed.
