Killing Morentherene Impossible on Throne of Bhaal Difficulty due primarily to a bug.

I am an expert video game player. My high scores on the games I play rank in the top 100 in the USA and in the top 300 in the world. I always play the hardest difficulty level so was glad when a Throne of Bhaal difficulty level appeared. Killing Morentherene on Throne of Bhaal is impossible however without cheating. I am sure that after this post several will pop up and say they have done it, and maybe even that it was easy. I am calling you liars in advance. Take a video of you doing it without cheating, upload it, then I will believe you. Until then, you are lying.

One of the reasons why it is impossible is due to a bug. The most devastating thing about Morentherene is her Green Dragon breath. The green dragon breath is poison damage so being completely immune to poison magical and otherwise should grant you immunity to her breath. It doesn't. I equipped my entire party with protection from poison scrolls and they all took full damage from the breath. This is surely a bug. Protection from fire, cold, acid, and electricity protect you from red, white, black and blue dragon breath in the Baldur's Gate series and in D&D, so why should protection from poison not protect you from green dragon breath? This is a bug which I hope to see fixed soon so that I can have a chance to take care of that pesky dragon. For now the first time she breathes 90% of my party is wiped out and she breathes around 5 times within a 20 second period.

Another bug which I encountered since the updates was when I re-added Dyhanier and Baleloth to my party they had mysteriously gained enough x.p. to put them at 20th and 18th level respectively, and had the h.p. for those levels but not the spell access. Strange.

What kind of damage is the green dragon breathe? POISON. And why do you bother to answer my post if you have nothing useful to contribute?

Someone finally found out the conspiracy. Everyone on Earth who has ever played the game has lied. I knew someone would find out eventually.

And we could have maintained the lie, too, if it wasn't for that pesky bestest player in teh whole world evar.

You sure it was the poison? Her script says she uses Death Fog(acid) and Incendiary Cloud(fire) too.

    I found something interesting too...
"You throw the dagger at the dragon and strike it in the heart. Death for the dragon is instant."

It seems throwing a dagger at her while she sleeps is an instakill. Anyone tested this?

    Thanks, buddy. I needed that.

I think the issue you're having is probably because of the distinction between immunity to poison effects and immunity to poison damage. They're two different things, and sometimes spell/item descriptions aren't very clear about this. I wouldn't call it a bug, though.

Wow! I'm actually quite shocked that you can insta-kill the dragon with a dagger. That's a very nice touch from the game developers - although it does makes you wonder why you can't do the same with a spear, an arrow or something like that. But what the heck, let's let it pass.

Incidentally, I did kill the dragon in my SoD run, on Core difficulty, in a regular fight. To tell you the truth, I simply can't let evil dragons lie...

So you can just simply throw a dagger? ..Mind blown. Why would THAT work? Is it a reference to something? :D

Dagger in the heart is the new knife in the back.

Did immunity to poison protect against the green dragons in BG2? If so, that would pretty cheesy, given how easy it is to summon poison immune skeletons...

I seem to recall that (at least in 1st edition) green dragon breath is specifically chlorine gas, which is corrosive as well as toxic.

As for the dagger, everyone knows that if you hit a dragon in the voonrables it will instantly kill it, provided it's a million to one chance.

As for the OP, no one cares how big it is, stop waving it about and put it away before you get arrested.

    It could be. ;)

if the protection from poison doesn't work and it's WAD, i'd really like an explanation. never noticed that. if it's really "chlorine gas" that would be pretty cool.

First of all, I moved the thread to the troubleshooting area. If you feel something is a bug you should use this section.

Second, while using this forum you have to follow the site rules - http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/10852/site-rules-mind-the-gap. These rules, among them, state that you have to be nice and respectful to each other. So please, @fenrirwolfsborn , respect people answering in your thread.

he was being straightforward in the op (he thinks he's an "expert gamer" so what? that isn't offensive towards anyone) and got berated by the next poster who called him out for irrelevant things, rolled his eyes and rudely (and i'd go so far to say meanly) disregarded a piece of information that OP already shared - and on top that - absolutely didn't contribute to the discussion. the OPs subsequent response telling that user that he didn't contribute to the discussion was perfectly fair.

you should take a better look and warn the offending user, not the OP.

The dagger thing reminds me of the Paladin Blues (Order of the stick) where a random hobgoblin kills a silver dragon by rolling a triple 20.

It made me think of something put in for game testers to get past it quickly but then forgotten about and not removed from the final code.

It is a completely optional encounter. I do not think that explanation is correct.

Hard to say, just made me think of that when a non-magical throwing dagger would do the job. It is strange since a normal party does seem to be capable of taking the dragon out without such a trick.

    I agree with @mf2112. Probably a leftover.

The only other thing I can think of is that it could be tied to some Steam achievement? Has anyone killed her this way with the Steam version of the game?

I think it is just an Easter egg. Like the ankheg armor in the farmer's field

To the OP: If you really want to kill the dragon that badly without cheats (or dagger), just use a druid and buff his ThAC0 as best you can. Cast harm, hit him and finish him off with any one point of damage (for example an insect plague, cast in tandem).

That's how I did it on my first run (highest difficulty. And no, I won't upload a video since I don't mind if someone on the internet calls me a liar).

If you don't like that, just be creative and you'll find a way other then that, I'm certain.
