Are there any farmable mobs that drop level 4 spells?

Minor Sequencer is one example of a hard-coded drop. But what if I fail to scribe it to my spellbook? Are there any mobs that I can farm for this scroll as a drop?

You can raise the chances of successfully writing to your spellbook by either having a high Intelligence, gulping a potion that raises INT temporarily - or by saving before writing and reloading if it fails.

Unless you've got mods I don't think there are any creatures that respawn and drop 4th level scrolls.

You can also lower your difficulty slider immediately before scribing and then raise it again immediately after to increase your scribe chances to 100%.

If you're doing some sort of purist run, (no-reload, no lowering difficulty), it's relevant to remember that specialists can never get their chance to memorize out-of-school spells higher than 85%, no matter how high they pump their INT. This is in my mind secretly the biggest drawback of the specialist mage in Core+ rules no-reload.

Losing an opposition school? No big deal. Having a 1-in-6 chance of losing a rare and super-important scroll to scribing failure no matter how thoroughly you prepare? Big deal.

Not true, Intelligence of 24 & 25 is guaranteed success, even for specialists.

That's good to know. The terrible failure rate even with 23 INT (19 base +4 Potion of Genius) was one of the major reasons I haven't done a no-reload specialist run. Guess I'll just have to add a Potion of Mind Focusing to that stack, too, then. :)

actually I think 24 INT only gives a 100% chance while 25 INT gives a 150 % chance, so I think only 25 INT makes it so you cant fail no matter what, although I haven't tested this theory

I tested for you. I created a Diviner, cheated him up to 23 INT, and had him scribe 32 scrolls, (two full inventories worth). He failed four times. That's right in line with what we'd expect based on a 15% failure rate, (4/32 = 12.5%).

I then had him use an INT tome to bump up to 24 INT and scribe 32 more scrolls. He did not fail a single time. Just to be sure, I ran it once more with 16 more scrolls, and again he did not fail to memorize a single one.

If specialist mages still had a 15% failure rate at 24 INT, the chances of memorizing 48 straight scrolls without failure are just 0.04%, so either I was just extraordinarily lucky, (highly unlikely), or else specialist mages really do have a 100% chance to scribe scrolls at 24 INT, (highly likely).

This is definitive enough for me. 23 INT = ~15% failure chance for specialists, 24 INT = 0% failure chance.
