Problem with Neera

Hi

I'm currently playing BG2:EE and have Neera in my party. She's nice character, but I have one big problem with her - she's wild surging all the time. According to wild mage descripiton Wild Surge have 5% chance to occur, but with her it feels like 70%. Sometimes effects are positive and all, but generally mage who does some random stuff is really weak and at this point it feels like she is just sucking expierniece without contributing to fights.

So my question - is this some kind of bug, that can be fixed? Or is this normal for wild mages, and I just didn't understood this class?

Are you casting Nahal's reckless dweomer? That has a 100% chance of surging. Otherwise, are you counting the spell caster level up and down as surging? Cuz I'm pretty sure that happens with every cast.

No, I don't use Nahal's thing and she's just wild surging like in the class description, but she is doing it way too often.

Are you really sure? Try this: load your save, cast all of Neera's spells and see how many wild surges you get. If you have the determination, you could repeat this two or three times. Then post your results here. Then we might have a better idea.

Mind you, I am not disagreeing with you. I have noticed a similar situation: whatever my mages' percentage of learning spells from scrolls is supposed to be, the game tends to make it look a lot less, that's how often they fail. But I haven't actually done a statistical analysis of this, so I cannot really be sure.

You should never discount the fact that there really is such a thing as rotten luck.

@xzar_monty IIRC there is a problem that every non specialist wizard takes a -15% penalty.

I think that was @kjeron who made this comment, but I can be wrong.

About Neera, I thought the same when I took her for the first time. Apparently every spell delivered a wild surge - and I'm not talking about the caster level adjustment. But this happened to me a long time ago and only in BGEE.

@Raduziel: Wow! Is this -15% penalty really true? If so, it would definitely explain the difficulty of learning from scrolls. And as far as I know, if this is true, it's also a real disappointment that it's not mentioned anywhere in the manuals.

Ok, so I checked everything once again, and apperently I gave Neera in the past item which cause wild magic effect without realizing what it did (I didn;t read whole describtion). This item was causing most of the surges but I just assumed it was happening beacuse Neera is Wild Mage. So my bad guys and thanks for the help.

Yeah, it's a specialist mage thing.

Specialist mages recieve +15% chance to memorize scrolls in their school of specialization, and -15% in all other schools.

This was the case in the original games too, but it wasn't discovered until a few years ago. All Beamdog did is add it to the class descriptions after the fans brought it to their attention.

Since the Wild Mage is a specialist mage with no actual school of specialization, they might just have a -15% penalty across the board. Not sure.

It's in the Adventurer's Guide - under the description for each specialist mage (it also refers to the specialist adjustments to spell saving throws there). There's not supposed to be any adjustments for the Wild Mage.

Apparently it is not an intended feature. I'll try to double check where I read it but seems that every wizard takes a -15% penalty for their non-specialized school. As the generalist have any, they get -15% in every school.

Again, I'm not a 100% sure. I'll try to remember where I read it.
