BGII-EE crash at startup with second monitor attached

When I start BGII - EE (Steam, on Ubuntu 17.10, Gnome Shell) while my second monitor (HDMI) is attached to my laptop the game crashes instantly and it logs me out of my Ubuntu session.
Anybody else encounter this problem?
Any ideas as to how the game can start with the second monitor hooked up?

    Hello! I suggest posting this issue as a bug report on support.baldursgate.com - this way you'll hear directly from our QA, and if there's a bug, it'll be tracked.
