Suggestions for a Newbie!

Hi fellas!

I haven't bought NWN:EE yet, but the game looks great and I'll definitely play it in a couple of weeks. I'd like to ask you some suggestions concerning the character creation.

1) Can I have some elucidations on the several sub-races? Can you play them from the beginning, or you rather need to achieve some levels to subrace? (I am particularly interested in lich and Vampire)

2) In BG and IWD I used to play with Paladin (black guard), Thief and Monk. What are the best set for this classes, and which particular prestige classes can they achieve? (particularly interested about paladins)

Thank you for your attention!

The best source for info on classes is the NWN Wiki. http://nwn.wikia.com/
Check out their page for Paladins! http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Paladin or Classes info http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Classes

The best prestige class for Paladin is probably the Champion of Torm. Weapon Master would be nice to get too but you need plenty of bonus feats from Champion of Torm to qualify.

    Thank you very much!

Yet, in that website I haven't found anything about Vampires and co. Are Vampires, Lichs,Drows,Dracos and so on playable races? It looks so from another website I have seen...any idea?

Sure will. Just follow the installation instructions to add the system to your module after importing the scripts into the module. You will also want to make sure you create some special clothing for vampires to walk in daylight, and have them on merchants they can easily purchase them from.

Once all that has been added to your module, all you have to do from there is put Vampire in the subrace field during character creation and your vampire is set to go.

Thank you very much Sylvus! I am really a newbie, so I don't really know how mods and scripts work. I'll buy NWN:EE on Steam for Mac. If you have any tips (helpful links and so on) to share, I'll be grateful for life (in this case, afterlife!)

Also, i have read that Vampires cannot enter private spaces...would that affect heavily the opportunity to complete many side quests?

All subraces and monstrous races are created by individual players voluntarily and reflect their skill level in modding, their design goals, and preferred flavor.

It's unlikely that any given module will account for a custom subrace, custom class, or any other feature without explicitly acknowledging that in their module description.

That means simply injecting the vampire subrace system into a module may not give you the expected results and most likely break things like plot or quests as you pointed out. For vampires to work properly the module designers would have to actually design the module for vampires itself. One such module is The Bitter Taste of Blood. https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/module/bitter-taste-blood

Ok, let me check if I am learning something: to customize the game, I need to inject a particular script (vampire) into a specific mod (bitter taste of blood). The real mystery is: what's a module? Is it a whole plot redisigned to make it work with particular script modification?

And secondly, how can I implement all these things with a game downloaded from Steam?

Thank you guys, you are all very generous and kind

In some cases you can also use custom content in say one of the original campaigns but unless the modules have been changed then you'll just get the bonuses and you'll probably be treated as just a human with ability score bonuses.

You don't need to modify The Bitter Taste of Blood as that already have the vampire subrace system "injected"/built into it. So that means you can plays as a vampire once you have that module installed. Whereas for other modules you'd have to actually modify it by importing the vampire subrace system in order to be able to play as a vampire.

A module is basically just another game designed for NWN that anyone with the right set of skills can make (or modify to suit their preferences). You make or modify modules using the Windows version of NWN but once a module is made it can be played on Mac or Linux too.

Excerpt from the NWN wiki http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Module

Modules can be created with the Toolset, which is included with the Windows versions of the game. The settings of modules can vary as much as the people who make them. While BioWare was bound by their license to use the Forgotten Realms setting, players are free to use any setting desired, even historical (or modern) settings like medieval France, or perhaps just a nameless haunted forest located "somewhere". Some modules are created by a Dungeon Master for their personal use as a multiplayer host, while others are shared, some supporting multiplayer (hosted by someone other than the module builder), others strictly single-player adventures.

Thank you vey much, really helpful!
Just to recap, I can download The Bitter taste of Blood and play as a vampire, while I'd have to inject the vampire into, let'say, Forgotten Realms, to play the same subrace. What could I do in the second instance, if I only have a Mac?

Yes. Except that Forgotten Realms is a game setting rather than a game itself.

You could try dual booting or VMware. See https://kb.iu.edu/d/ahjj

I suggest you just play the game/modules as is until you become familiar with things before considering any modifications on your own. You got to be a good player first before you can be a modder.

eheheh, makes perfect sense =) Altough I have to confess, being a Vampire Black Guard is always been my uncanny dream! I'll do everything to play that character, probably after a little training!
