The animating spirit in most golems is an earth elemental iirc. Wood Golems (its an equine mount golem...) are an air elemental though. So... makes sense!
It's a good thing I didn't become a quest designer at CD Projekt Red after all. Those guys are long time fans of the BG series, so I'd totally get away with a lot of quests which you could accept by saying "I'll do it for a turnip" or decline by saying "Tedious monkey work!".
