Yeah, that's the key. Doing that strategy in BG1 won't get you anywhere, but if you dual-class in BG2, you can get a few levels back quickly by picking a bunch of locks and disarming a bunch of traps. You can do the same thing with writing scrolls into your spellbook if you dual to a mage.
Ok, I got CLUAConsole to come up, but the command to set EXP doesn't seem to work. I entered it EXACTLY as written, rreplacing XXXXX with 10000, and nothing happened. There's some scripting error.

You're better off using shadowkeeper to edit your characters anyway
after you did the CLUA and hit enter take a step with the character so the game advances you shoudl then hear the ding saying you lvled assuming having 10k xp lvls your character
