" Also, mental stats have zero effect on saving throws in 2nd Edition D&D. You are thinking of 3rd Edition. The only stat modifier to saving throws is Constitution based if you are a Dwarf (Death, Wands, Spells), Halfling (Death, Wands, Spells), or Gnome (Wands, Spells). "
Wisdow give more defensive bonus against Mental Spells in the AD&D rulebook. Also Dex give a help in reflex saves. (Wands , fireballs etc). In the rulebook of course. (I play AD&D pen and paper even today).
BG II is very close to AD&D rules but it have some changes.
Too bad they never implemented a minions and skill points system! Where Int and Cha would be much more important even to warriors.
Despite repeated requests to have the Wisdom modifier applied to mental saves this wasn't implemented it seems.
I just need to rage a little bit. Minsc was a ranger in BG because the rules used didn't have a Berserker kit.
If it were in fact true, wouldn't it make more sense to put him as a Fighter since Berserker in BG2 is a fighter kit? Also if it were true, why didn't they move him to a Berserker when BG2 came out?
Putting Minsc on a Ranger progression table and giving him spells doesn't seem like a 'fix' as you are suggesting.
I think it is fair to say that Minsc's rage ability is more of an extension of his personality than it is supposed to be class derived skill. This being the case, regardless of his class, Minsc would still be able to rage as he is "a dangerous berserker in battle" as stated in the BG2 manual.
As was mentioned more than once in this thread, Rashemen Rangers and Fighters do have the berserk ability. The correct fix would not be make Minsc a Berserker, but implement the Rashemi Ranger kit in the game and make him one.
I don't remember what are the other characteristics of the Rashemen and I can't find my books, but I remember that one of the limits was that the berserker state was very short...
