How did my character get unkillable?

OK. I've finished the game 3 times since EE came out and I just started my first only solo attempt. For this, I grabbed 3 2da files from another link in this forum that would disable the xp cap. (is there a way to check this, other than getting a character to >161k xp?).
Anyway, I start a new game, I do the little Candlekeep quests, and en route to the Friendly Arm inn, I'm jumped right outside the inn in a scripted ambush. My little level 1 character got beat down to one hit point, but subsequent hits did not kill him? The combat log was showing me taking between 1-4 damage, but I stayed at 1 hit point.
I won't enjoy the game if I'm in full-on god mode, so, any thoughts? I've never seen this before, but neither have I tested for it nor played a solo game before. Are you supposed to be unkillable before Friendly Inn? Did those alleged xp unlocking files somehow cause this?

I guess a screeny with the situation would be more helpful sounds a bit fishy to me...
[sidenote: odd feature...in case such stuff is gotten implemented]
However, I was rushing my way to Nashkel, and in the zone just north of it I was hit and killed.
I don't know what to make of it. Unkillable for the first 30 minutes of gameplay? Unkillable until a certain zone is reached? Not sure.
Answer to thread title question:
Because you are awesome?
It's probably equipped to your amulet slot. Not sure if you can remove it in game; you may need to edit a save in Shadow Keeper or Near Infinity or the like.
EDIT: Ah, didn't read that you had been killed. It may just be the "playability" feature discussed in the thread Shandyr linked, coupled with luck.
