I use the bag on the corner across the street from the Inn Silke stands in front of until I enter BG City - then I use a barrel outside the Elf Song - in both cases I also leave NPCs that I'm resting standing around that same area and by not using a house I don't have to enter/exit just stroll up and click on the bag/barrel.
Sometimes I have so much crap in Beregost it takes more than one trip to move it to BG City and usually there is a lot left over in BG City when I head off to meet my nemesis that there's no point in selling becuase what am I going to do with cash? Throw it at him? ;-)
Still I AM a bona fide packrat so I do the same thing pretty much every game... :-)
Actually, directly across from the Red Sheaf Inn is the home of Borland, who actually invites you to use his home--and you can rest there as well (the only home in which you enjoy that privilege, IIRC). You have to choose the right dialog options, but it's pretty obvious which ones will earn his favor.
Good tip! Are there many containers in that house?
Yes, there's a dresser that I typically use. You can unlock and use his chest, as well. But if you steal from it you will no longer be welcome as his guest.
I sometimes remove NPCs from the party in this home, and park them in front of the fire.
For splitting NPC pairs you'll want to choose some other location, though, since IIRC when they see the other member of the pair they try to rejoin.
In BG city I have on occasion used Ragefast's home, after defeating him of course. Too bad you can't sleep there as well.
In BG city I have also used the upstairs of inns, i.e., a container in one of the rooms, and just imagined that I was renting a room there. The contents remain undisturbed.
