Always best room, it's not like you are ever short on cash. Also if I remember correctly sleeping in the best room heals you +3hp(!) more than sleeping in the worst room.

I spend my money on more interesting things like consumables and gear so that I can play no-reload/core rules now ...

I wonder how many times we sleep in an inn in a play through?

    50? 100 times?

    I guess that's only 1500 gp or so which isn't much ...

    Sleeping outside is cheaper.

Hrm... I tend to go with Noble to Royal.

It's the same with my girl Neera! ...because she keeps talking to me about wanting to sleep in an inn when we're like, under the Firewine Bridge, and I feel bad, so I overcompensate. D:

No, really, healing. Every little bit helps!

I always rent royal, Gold really isny an issue in Baldurs Gate after early game and roleplaying wise I just feel a godspawn deserves some high end shit.

I usually go with the Merchant Room... Not too costly and I like my party to sleep in at least some comfort.

For me, I start out in the cheap rooms. Once I start raking in more money than I can spend, I go to the merchant rooms. Towards the end of the game, I migrate to the best that they have available. By about the time you go into Baldur's gate, you have much more money than is reasonable and could probably buy out Bergost or Nashkal. Why not spread around some of the wealth (and rub it in too boot)?

Every time one of those "alms, alms for the poor" guys hits me in up BG2 they get at least a gold piece out of me. If they spend four hours a day doing that, I think even the beggars can afford a royal room in BG :)

I'm rarely so poor that I can't sleep like a king.

I always sleep in merchant class rooms. Anything better seems too extravagant to me.
