Accidentally saved a new game over my old game

I made a new character and accidentally saved it over my old game which was pretty far. Is there any hope of retrieving that old game file? Or is it a lost cause?

I'm afraid it's a lost cause if you saved over it. Do you have other saves of that game? Maybe an auto-save? If you don't I'm afraid that it's gone :(.
Anyway you wrote in the wrong section @Aedan @Metalloman

You can use Recuva(http://www.piriform.com/recuva) to find older versions of the files. Hope it helps.

If you're using windows 7 there is a small chance the file can be recovered if the correct options are enabled.

Right click the savegame folder and go to the previous versions tab. It may be named something similar, my windows version is localized. If you don~t have this tab then recovering options in Windows are disabled.

@mlnevese has the suggestion to try first.

The problem with recuva metha is that the file wasn't deleted, it was overwrote. The file has already been destroyed.
