This reminded me of this old something awful thread, Is Faerun ready for it's first half orc president. This is from the 2008 election.

Human or half-elf is what I usually play. Human mostly for single class, and of course for dual; and half-elf mostly for multi. Every once in a blue I'll play something else for variety sake, though.

Its about 50/50 human/elf for me.

I like to play FMT or FM a lot, and Dual class is just too much dang fun!

I really like being humanlike, but still different. I also rp my elf characters a bit off the beaten path, although good. Also, i really really like the ad&d races, they might be cheesy, but the nice diverisity is something that other fantasy worlds fail to aquire imo.

Primarily human, with the occasional elf or half elf to mix things up. The shorty races just seem like too much of a novelty for me to take a playthrough with them seriously.

    Dat multiclass.

The word choice of the title of this thread could have been better...

This poll needs a multi select option. Since BG:EE I have been playing only short non-humans. Pre BG:EE i would play mostly half elf.

I am all over the board when it comes to making characters and playing them through

Paladins are awesome, but they must be human.

Therefore, I frequently find myself playing a human.

I mostly play as humans and half-elves.

For me it's Half-Orcs and any other bestial race which is clearly *not* human (or some sort of human knockoff, such as elves).

    okay question

    how come there is half-elves and half-orcs but no half-halfings, half-dwarves, half-gnomes or half-humans

seems a little unfair that basically only half of the races can have half counterparts. You really should be able to pick both halves of your race, such as Half-Halfing Half Gnome Illusionist Thief

I tend to go with mages/sorcerers as my PC class, and elves bring a few advantages to that particular class...

Seeing racism everywhere? I have little expectation of people, and they still manages to surprise me. Too bad it's hardly ever in positive way.

There is a very simple reason why AD&D included half elves and half orcs as PC races - both are in Tolkien.

Obviously, rules couldn't be included for every hybrid species that might be possible. But in PnP you could always work out something exotic with the DM.

I seem to recall that the original version of BG alowed you to rename your race to anything you liked. That feature seems to have been lost in EE.

Half Dwarves are a PC race in the Dark Sun setting.

    Human and Dwarf.

    Never an elf.

Human if I dual-class, elf or half-orc if multiclass.

But... but why didn't you chose half-elf, then, @wadce? :'(

That's Neverwinter Nights, not Baldur's Gate, where you can choose subraces and name the said race.

Of course, I always pick pure (proud) human.

Human makes the most sense from an RP perspective, particularly if you consider Sarevok is your brother.

How does that make any sense? Sarevok is your half-brother, as is ANY Bhaalspawn, obviously and by definition.

That being said, I don't discriminate. Play whatever race feels interesting.

    You mean quarterlings?

Wouldn't it be three-quarterlings? I mean, if a halfling is half, and human is full, then the middleground would be three quarters.

I like the Tolkien's conception of elves. They are spiritually superior to humans and other races. At the end all depends on the individual but there are certain patterns found in races. Most of the drow and duergar are "evil", for example. Killing for fun or for "respect" may sound "cool" in d&d but it is not in real life.

That being said, I prefer intelligent and civilized races that create stuff, rather than destroy them or take without giving back.
