As for the special ability, I was considerinig it, but it doesn't really fit for specialist to have innate ability. He is better at casting his magic, but doen't develop innate powers I think. That's why I prefer empowering spells in the spellbook. Although it is simpler solution.
The trademark spell is a good idea, but it would kinda make them all same. Perhaps adding the option to choose the trademark spell from several options.
I like the idea to select a trademark spell. That would add further roleplay options, i.e. an Invoker/ice specialist (with Ice Cone as trademark instead of the "typical" Fireball). It could be a high(er) level spell that will automatically be added to the spellbook, with no worries when/where/if at all to find the scroll and solve more than one issue with the current "specialists". (And become castable at the usual level, so it's also a strategic thing - take a level 3 spell and get the bonus early, or wait for a level 5 spell and wait a long time?)
@Pecca: I think it's a great idea. For vanilla and wild mage, this could be combined with picking a trademark spell; specialists could get it for their school.
