Yes, that will definitely make the game more fun.

I've shockingly never used Coran. Actually, I lie: I added him to my party once on my very first playthrough back in 199X. I largely blame this on his abysmal portrait, which was pretty-much the main reason I didn't use a lot of characters back in the day (e.g. Faldorn).

But then I discovered PaintBG, and all was right with the world.

I've also never once used Alora, and added Skie just to kill her off so Eldoth wouldn't leave. And considering I always play evil characters, the fact I've never once used Tiax is worrying. The others have all had at least transient rolls in my parties.

My most used characters are... well, all the evil ones bar Tiax. Shar-Teel, Edwin and Viconia usually get slots for their winning personalities. A Dualled Xzar is also majorly up there in terms of utility and just general awesomeness. I'm also really fond of Dorn, out of the new NPCs.

Just to jump on the 'X are OP' discussion last page, as a lover of both Edwin and Viconia, I wouldn't mind one bit if they had interesting 'nerfs' that fit their various backstories, like barring Edwin from another school of magic, or giving Viconia some disadvantages in daylight. I use them because I like them.

Tiax's ghast is useful to take basilisk hunting

Yep, but by the time I meet Tiax, I have usually cleared the basilisk map long ago. And I often do Durlag's upper level early to dual Xzar. So there are no basilisks left for Tiax, except the one in the warehouse.

I also agree that Coran's portrait is horrible. He's supposed to be a ladies man and super charismatic, plus being an elf should make him a pretty boy, but he looks like something went seriously wrong. I took him along for the first time in BGEE and immediately changed his portrait.

For BG1, one NPC I'd want to bring along but never do is Xan. He just shows up so late in the game.

I think you're probably thinking of another NPC. Xan is available early.
By gum, you're right, he does.

    He's also quite dreary.
