You're most under-used NPC's?

I don't think i've ever picked up Shar-Tel. On my current playthrough i picked up Safana for the first time. Also, i feel like Xzar and Montaron are lacklusters (in terms of stats) compared to other characters, and i usually dump them after i pick up Kagain.

Baldur's Gate & Tales of the Sword Coast NPCs SCARY_WIZARD Uses In Order Of "Most To Not-Most"
    Imoen
    (Neera)
    Shar-Teel Dosan
    Yeslick
    Viconia DeVir
    Branwen
    Garrick
    Safana
    Ajantis Ilvastarr
    Kivan
    Kagain
    Alora
    Skie Silvershield
    Quayle
    (Dorn Il-Khan)
Eldoth Kron (usually just so I can pick up Skie; then, he meets an unfortunate end after telling Shar-Teel to bake him cookies)
    Tiax
    Minsc
    Dynaheir
    Edwin Odesseiron
    Coran
    Xzar
    Montaron
    Jaheira
    Khalid
    (Rasaad yn Bashir)
    Korax the Ghoul
    Xan

Finch and Indira also go on this list, above Imoen, in the case of Tutu. I love those two! I should include the tutorial NPCs, too, since I liked exploiting some of them into my party in the vanilla game. :3

Hmm. Least used... (this is in order from my 'most least' to 'least least')...

    Faldorn
    Skie
    Eldoth
    Alora
    Quayle
    Tiax

All because they're available late, not because I don't like them or think they aren't valuable team members.

I think it'd have to be Branwen. She's the only one that I haven't finished the game with at least once.

I've never used Garrick, Faldorn, or Quayle... like ever.

I never use Eldoth, Skie and Quayle. I also rarely use Garrik, Safana and Faldorn.
As far as BG2 I never use Valygar.

@SCARY_WIZARD: You will never know how much I've laughed as I've seen that you prefer to take even Korax the Ghoul on Xan!

    WE'RE ALL DOOMED!!! XD

Yep, I wrote out that list just so I could do that.
To be fair, I give Xan his Moonblade and send him on his way. It's just not right to separate something like that from the person bound to it.
Korax, I just give directions to hit basilisks until he wises up and attacks me. And by "me", I mean "Imoen". What does he have against her?! Every savegame, it's the same story -- I pick up Korax, Korax tanks basilisks, Korax tries to DPS Imoen, Shar-Teel feeds Korax steel through his sinus cavity. She is so cute you could just gobble her up, but it's just a figure of speech, Korax, come on. Eat those rude adventurers in the eastern part of the map, or Mutamin, not Imoen! Imoen is cool. :/

As many times as I've run through the game over the years, I've always felt bad about not taking the canon party. I actually broke the cycle, and am on my way to Baldur's Gate for the first time with an evil party, minus Imoen.

I frequently use Shar-Tel, and always dual classed to thief.

I have never used Tiax, Quayle or Alora (not even recruited to look at stats).

I have had Faldorn, Eldoth and Skie for maybe 30 minutes/each.

I usually end up with Branwen, Minsc and Kivan/Coran + depending on what the protagonist is.
Yeslick is almost always added in the mines (Bye bye Branwen or Jaheira)

Xzar and Montaron have only been used as cannon fodder to FAI, will use them for my first ever evil play through though.

I never take Xan, Tiax Quaye or Kivan. Xan's just annoying and there are better and more interesting mages. Kivan just never fits my party well, I'd rather use Coran or someone more versatile. Quayle and Tiax sound interesting, I just never pick them up.

Strangely, I do like the Eldoth/Skie combo. You do have to rush to get Skie at as low a level as possible, but I love Eldoth's quest to abduct a noble woman and ransom her. Eldoth can actually be a great support character, spells plus archery and singing. Plus all of Skie's dialogue makes me laugh. Stuff like "I have a cold." or "My feet hurt." is just funny to me, especially in the whiney way she says it. It is hard to get her traps and locks up high enough to do Durlag's tower, but it is possible, with some potions. It's much more for entertainment purposes that I take Eldoth and Skie, but totally worth it for me. They amuse me, and that's more important than building the most badass party possible.

Mazzy in BG2 is one that I don't take. Woohoo an archer that can't pick a lock or disable a trap. Also, that worthless druid, whose name escapes me right now.

Mazzy is an archer who can hit things, with high accuracy and high frequency. That's much better than a Thief (or worse, a Thief/Mage) who shoots like a Stormtrooper.

Cernd is, indeed, entirely useless, unless you want to ice Faldorn and you don't have your own Druid handy.

This thread makes me think that one day I might do a run where I solo until Cloakwood and pick up

    Faldorn
    Eldoth
    Quayle
    Tiax
    Alora

Just to break things up, i.e., use the idea of an 'only available later' bunch to build a game around for something different. But come to think of it, SCS offers a mod component that places Quayle and Tiax in Chapter 1. So I can use that and not have to solo for Chapters 1-3.

Does Eldoth eventually leave if you don't do his quest?

My most frequent charnames are very attached to an evil mage each (cleric to Xzar, thief to Edwin), so I basically never use Dynaheir, Xan or Neera (though I finally built up a tolerance to her annoying voice and can do her quest) and while my jester now has rp history with Baeloth, I rarely take him for longer than "ohai nice robe" now.
I only had Tiax and Quayle for a short test run, ever, and I never ever had Skie in my party. Eldoth, quite frequently if I'm not playing a bard. Also very underused in the long run - Garrick, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc, Ajantis and Rasaad. Generally the good aligned NPCs, though I quite like Yeslick and Alora. From the evil NPCs that aren't late game - Viconia. I just don't get what's so great about her.

I often have Xzar and Monty long term; their stats are awesome. Monty is so super versatile; better as a frontlining thief than dualed Shar-Teel, despite her better strength; and Xzar is hands down the best cleric in the game, so I often have him and Edwin in the same party. He makes a quite efficient tank, too.

What is the difference between Evil and Good playthrough? Beside the spells you get.
  • KidCarnivalKidCarnival Member Posts: 3,747
The spells/abilities are from your reputation, not your alignment.

There's an occasional evil option for quests, that you may or may not take (regardless of alignment), but besides that it's all up to you: to kill peasants, or not to kill peasants?

Eldoth & Skie - never (may have picked Eldoth up long enough to look at his sheet)
Alora - almost never - too late for an important role and get annoyed quickly with her voice/personality
Shar Teel - Faldorn & Safana -rarely - never for any extended period I can recall
Ajantis - Tiax - Quayle - not often but I like using them occasionally
Dyna - just not a fan - not sure why - but rarely keep her around

I kind of like Dynaheir. She reminds me a bit of Jaheira in her assertiveness. There's also a good bit of breaking-the-fourth-wall comedic fun with her voiced lines. I could care less about her specialization (i.e., not having access to Enchantment spells). She can cast what she can cast, no big whup to me.
  • KidCarnivalKidCarnival Member Posts: 3,747
I took Dynaheir in my current run (though, with the intention to get her and Minsc fight with Edwin, it's a run to see the NPC fights I haven't seen yet) and she's really not as bad as people often say. I also thought she'd sound like a total bitch, but her voiceset isn't nearly as annoying as some others. She sounds like a strong, proud person; maybe a bit too confident, but definitely not like an entitled brat. Her stats are also decent. Might try to dual her next time and use her as cleric, as I usually do with Xzar. With her con, this could be above "decent".

Yeah, I think Invoker/Cleric actually works pretty well too for the Rashemi witch thing Dynaheir has going on. I've been intending to try her out that way too.

(somehow I always end up killing edwin instead of adding him to my party... i won't deny it I hate him and I'll always kill him if i see him around)...If edwin didn't have his cheating op neckless I would say Dynaheir would be the best Pure follower npc mage in BG....

In BG1 - Alora. Never had her in the party, the same I can say about Skie. I think that it is due they appearing late.

In BG2 - Jan Jansen. The most annoying NPC to date, IMO. There is nothing I can add to it.

Yeah, that's what I thought... The Slow Poison as ability is neat for a cleric; it's a spell you only need in certain areas and I often forget to memorize - awkward in random hobgoblin archer travel encounter, and the character concept of a shaman-like witch fits the healer type, too. The more I think about it, the more I like her voiceset, too. (Though, maybe that is because I currently have JAHEIRA as PARTY LEADER... What was I thinking?)

Edwin's necklace is neither a cheat nor OP. Ever looked at Alora's rabbit foot? It is rivaled only by Solaufein's sword. ;)

Edwin's necklace is neither a cheat nor OP. Ever looked at Alora's rabbit foot? It is rivaled only by Solaufein's sword. ;)

*It is Op cuz your charname can't never be better mage than him....
*It is Op cuz you can get him at lvl 1 Alora is end game follower and she must have something that want player to add her to him or her to add alora to the party
*it is op cuz he makes all other follower mages in the game less wanted cuz he still is beeter than them when it comes casting spells per day...

That beeng said I know he is a red wizard and red wizard cast more spells per day then averege wizard but they also knows less spells than other mages:

Enhanced Specialization: Upon becoming a Red Wizard, a character increases his devotion to his wizard school of specialization. In exchange for this, the Red Wizard must sacrifice study in one additional schools of magic.. in edwins case it would be giving up on evocation spells.... then he would be balanced... he get more spells per day as a red wizard should be also get it's special hindrances in that i can't cast spells from 2 school of magic as all other red wizard... as he is now he gets all the benefits of red wizard but not their hindrances... thats cheating...
