    1. Yes. Attempting to lay a trap within a certain distance of an NPC should make them turn hostile.

    2. No. Setting traps is fine as it is.

    Yep

Some dragons are actually scripted to do so, but due to errors in the engine these triggers never fired. Thieves beware--this will be fixed for BG2EE.

I liked how dragons are scripted to attack when you cast Fire Shield or Protection from Fire. Nice.

I really think it depends on how easily offended an NPC is. Some may think "oh look, how cute, a trap", others may feel more threatened than amused.

It depends on the enemy in my opinion. IF you set a trap in an enemies blind spot (typically behind), then no. But creatures like dragons, some demons, beholders and the like have 360* "vision" (either due to highly attuned senses, magic that does similar, or having a crap ton of eyes) out about 60 feet or so, and should always become hostile unless you're far enough away (which would be outside of a character's LOS radius).

Well, unfortunately, directional triggers aren't really possible--this is the biggest reason why enemy thieves 'cheat' and backstab you from any direction instead of just your back.

To the broader point, yes, it would depend on the enemy. Irenicus at the Tree of Life couldn't do anything about traps being laid down, but Saladrex certainly could and should.

any placed traps should disappear after rest. I think that is easier to script and eliminate much of the gouda plaguing this tactic

As little wisdom as Firkraag has, he should be able to notice that some rogue is laying traps right beneath his [Firkraag's] feets. Besides, I dislike cheese, and by that statement I do not mean a "product". Laying multiple traps just before your enemy is something that can be considered "cheesy tactics".

No... The reason being that if you explain to said NPC that you are trying to the rid the local area of a Dire Mole infestation, they usually just stand around and watch... Happens in my game? What happens in yours?

That's work if there was bluff checks and sense motive checks.

Also, if someone watches you place a trap, wouldn't they be aware of it and make sure they don't set it off during combat?
