Ettercap, Ghast, Ghoul

My question is really rather simple... These are 3 types of "undead" creatures that look very similar. What were they before they were undead? Were they the same and it's like a human could become a lich, skeleton, ghost or vampire, depending on who makes them undead/how they are rendered undead? Were ettercaps, ghasts and ghouls humans, too?

As for ghouls and ghasts they were supposedly human (or elf or whatever) before their transformation.
It has been suggested that ettercaps are the descendants of a group of mad druids, tainted and transmogrified by their association with a powerful demon into a form resembling the predatory arachnids their cult once revered. While the vast majority have completely reverted to pure animal instinct, a rare few are claimed to demonstrate the intellect and capacities of an insane human. About as clever a me then...
Ghasts and Ghouls are related. And they are undead.
Mad Mage Oogle told me that...
...Ghouls are monstrous, undead humanoids who reek of carrion. A ghoul is said to be created on the death of a man or woman who savored the taste of flesh; this was probably derived from the popular connection of the word 'ghoul' with persons who delight in the unsavory. They not only eat the dead, but also prey on the unwary living. Ghouls can paralyze their victims with a touch, though elves are immune. Aside from the standard ghoul, a number of other varieties exist.
Ghouls are humanoid undead that feed on the flesh of corpses. They lair within ancient crypts or hide in graveyards where food is plentiful. Whenever possible, a ghoul will attack a living target as a rare opportunity to have fresh meat.
A ghoul appears to be an emaciated humanoid creature with putrid grey skin. Its teeth have worn away into fangs and it has a long-lashing tongue. The fingers and toes of a ghoul end in sharp claws, blackened from constantly digging up grave dirt.
People rightfully fear ghouls and their corpse-eating ways. The bite of a ghoul inflicts a terrible disease. Any who die from the illness arises as a ghoul soon afterward. The touch of a ghoul carries a necromantic power that paralyzes those whom the
The scary bit is that Ghasts are older stronger Ghouls. Almost like half-ghost, half-ghoul. Although I reckon there just the sport edition that goes faster. 'Don't be a fool and buy a Ghoul, be fast and get a Ghast' was the pitch thrown at me at the evil dictator sales conference (World domination shouldn't cost the earth!)
Mad Mage Oogle says...
The ghast is similar to the ghoul, but is distinguished by its monstrously foul and supernaturally nauseating stench. Elves can fall victim to a ghast's paralytic touch.
Although I can vouch that the paralytic touch of both a ghast and a ghoul works on elves.
Anyway, this answers my question; the Special Ghoul Sale doesn't offer such a bargain. I'll wait for Ghast Weeks then.

Ettercaps have never been human, nor they are undead. They are poisonous, aggresivemonsters with an affinity to spiders and trapping people with devious web traps.
