True, throw haer dalis in as well. But at least Jan levels his thief skills, I want to try the Mage dualed to thief Nalia mod. They put knock and find traps to explain her helping the poor shtick.
Neutral Evil Illusionist/thief, Xzar, Montaron, Kagain, Edwin, viconia. I completed Baldurs Gate 2 with a Standard Mage, Aerie, Jaheria, Minsc, Jan Jansen (I did use yoshimo but the plot twist pained me so) and Imoen
I played a human ranger right out of the box because I thought Kivan's picture was really cool. I remember him being almost untouchable. I beat Sarevok fairly easily (although I don't remember my tactics - I was probably playing on beginner back then). TOTSC kicked my butt, though. Especially Durlag's Tower and that damned chess board!
My party was Khalid, Jaheira, Imoen, Minsc and Branwen initially. I thought Dynaheir was wimpy back then so after the gnolls I dumped Minsc (I didn't know about 'ctrl y' yet) and added Ajantis. I thought I needed all good characters since my main character was good. Even worse, I didn't take Coran because I thought his picture was goofy and Kivan had the same picture as mine so I didn't take him either. Looking back on it, I don't know how I breezed through to the end w/o any mages. Must have been a lot of reloads...
Addition:
Amusing side note, I rolled stats for over an hour on this guy to get an 18(00) strength but wound up having to take a 3 charisma. I had no idea why Khalid was running around in fear most of the game! I kept him because of Gorion's advice. I thought there MUST be some reason to keep this annoying twerp around.
That ranger was also the only character I ever won vanilla BG with. I started many more PC's but never stuck with any of them to the end. I imported him to BG2 but with kits and all I found him to be too dull to play all the way through with. I soon discovered the wonders of modding and the only PC I took all the way through Throne of Bhaal (via BGT) was a dual Swashbuckler/Mage. That character was a blast!
I really want to play a swashie mage. I killed drizzy wizzy for the first time with an archerer solo. I was level 9 and it was easy really. So I imported him to a half elf blades game and gave him drizzits weapons and chain and I haven't had to reload yet with jaheira, dorn, imoen, neera, and khalid.
BG1: LN Necromancer, Khalid, Kivan, Branwen, Yeslick, and Imoen. I then started exploring evil characters/paths.
BG2: LE Necromancer, Korgan, Viconia, Jaheira, Minsc, Imoen
ToB: NE Necromancer (after Hell-trial alignment change), Korgan, Viconia, Sarevok, Jaheira, Imoen (switching with Jan when I needed a competent thief).
BGEE: LE Necromancer, Kagain, Dorn, Viconia, Montaron, (Eldoth ran off in disgust after Skie was "accidentally" chunked)
@mortianna it makes me happy that all your playthroughs were Necromancer. It's just what I picture you doing. I'm in the middle of my first all evil playthrough (that I'm taking serious) with cleric/thief, Korgan, viccy, edwin(a), Haer Dalis, and Imoen (never made it through the game without her). I plan on doing a mage playthrough and make it a necromancer slightly based off of what I picture your RP experience as.
Kitted to Stalker for BG2 and TOB. Probably still my favourite CHARNAME so far.
(ran with every NPC in BG1 at some stage, swapping out when new ones became available, always keeping Minsc and Dynaheir....again every NPC in BG2, default Jaheira, Minsc and Yoshimo with the rest open for NPC quests i was doing at the time, then filled with Aerie and Viconia for endgame.)
Aerie rules, but it may depend on the party setup. Other than that, she's wonderful in every way. Anyway...
BG1: Charname as fighter/mage, played as caster and archer. Kagain Shar-Teel Viconia Montaron (dumped Xzar in a house - trick) Edwin
BG2: Imported CHARNAME returned as a fighter/mage, this time meleeing a bit more! Korgan -> Sarevok in ToB (it was a coin toss) Jaheira Yoshimo -> Jan(!!!) -> Imoen GET! Viconia Edwin
Aaaand after a subsequent good-aligned powergamey parties made it, next up are: gimped npcs and/or playing as a gimped class.
@Schneidend She's a great party member. I just hate her personality.
She can be grating, but that's why having her in the party is rewarding. Aside from Anomen and possibly Viconia, she has the most potential for character development. You can choose equally whiny things to say for CHARNAME in BG1, but eventually both characters grow out of it.

My first BG Tutu completion was a NE Berserker with Shar-Teel, Viconia, Kagain, Xzar, and Montaron.
My first BG2 completion was a CN Berserker with Jaheira, Viconia (pattern detected), Minsc, Imoen, and Jan.

Poor Dynaheir had the misfortune of reading a cursed scroll just after we released her and was unable to continue the journey with us :P
My first orignal BG1 party was:
CHARNAME - Mage/Cleric
Jaheira

Minsc
Imoen
Dynaheir
My first BG2/TOB party was:

First to beat the entire saga (I.e. both expansions) was a cavalier.*
This save used a lot of shadow keeper to change weapon profs
