I am having problems finding answers to stupid questions. I have been searching for half an hour to find Imoen's thief skill point distribution at the start of the game (I wan't to know what my thief protagonist can do without at the start). Can anyone link a few sites besides the Wikia that are good for looking up mundane questions about things like this?

I really don't know about any guide that lists such specific information, but I just checked one of my early savegames for you. Here are Imoen's initial thief skill points:

    Open Locks: 25
    Find Traps: 35
    Pick Pockets: 25
    Move Silently: 35
    Hide In Shadows: 15
    Detect Illusion: 0
    Set Traps: 5

@Petrecles http://playithardcore.com/pihwiki/index.php?title=Baldur's_Gate is a great site for general info... Believe it or not I don't think Imoen's stats are there...

Of course the best walkthrough is here at http://www.forgottenwars.com/index.html this actually has the stats you want... Just click on BG1 NPC on the right. Be warned... It can give too much information and be a bit of a spoiler...

If you max out your Open Locks, you can open a really hard drawer in the Inn in Candlekeep. And Imoen's trap finding can be raised pretty quickly to cover you there while you get your thief leveled up.

Those are also the only two thief skills really necessary. Being a thief yourself, Imoen doesn't really need much in the way of thief skills so you can dual her after only a couple levels when your CHARNAME's trapfinding catches up.

Good to know thanks! I am making an elf swashbuckler so I can get 65 points in open locks. I think the game will subtract five points upon creation. Will that be enough?

    @bengoshi
You have been so much help on all of my questions. Thank you so much!

P.S.- I am playing evil for the first go through. If Imoen is anything like she was in BG2 I will dump that whiney B!*$% as soon as possible lol.

I'm thinking its probably enough, especially maxing out your Dex as an elf.

Imoen, you'll need to decide on your own, hehe. She has much more emotional impact in the second game if you know her from the first game as the character's younger sister and all 'round cuddly basket of cheer.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure it has to be a Halfling Thief (or Thief/whatever) with maxed Open Locks. Then you get a 75, which is what you need to open that drawer.

Bonus tip: if you have 18 CHA, you can talk to the couple on the groundfloor of the Inn and convince them to store their valuables on that drawer, giving you more stuff to sell.

Also, talk to Firebead Elvenhair 30 consecutive times and wait a few seconds to get an extra 300 gold.

This post is dedicated to Gorion, the high level Mage who's given me a measly 40 gold because that was "all he could spare". Good thing my character wasn't kidnapped, you cheap old fart.

@Kilivitz I've opened it with a human swashbuckler. I think its only 65. The change to the BG2 engine gives everyone more points I think.

Guess I stand corrected. Good to know, then!

    Ya~ =)
I know you're right in the original game, only one or two races could get enough points to open it. But now you have some more options, including apparently a berzerking half orc.

Ahh the Elf methinks will only have 60 because he has a racial 'bonus' of -5 to locks. I read that doesn't get subtracted until you create the game.
  • KilivitzKilivitz Member Posts: 1,459
True, that. Elves are too highty mighty to focus on being burglars or scoundrels, even the evil ones, I guess.

Which is probably why they can't be Bards. I never got why a class with a natural talent for arts and lorekeeping isn't available to them, but I guess I've just answered my own question.

Man, am I derailing topics tonight.

With 19 dex I have 65 in open locks. And to be certain, I made sure I could pick the lock. =3

Yeah but you had a human. I have an elf. I think I will only have 60.
  • CaptRoryCaptRory Member Posts: 1,660
No I tried it again before I posted. I rolled up an elf swashie with 19 dex.

I forget… If you don't spend a proficiency point will the point be saved for use at the following level?

I actually tested this and you need 60 lock picking to open that chest in Candlekeep inn. (Did not work with 55).

Plus, Imoen dualled at lvl 6 to a mage (max mage levels) will still get you 100% lockpicking and around 75% traps (which is enough. save for one or two traps). Plus a good mage. I rarely really focus on thief utility skills with my CHARNAME Thieves - Imoen can cover that in BG1. (Except Swashbuckler as he does not need stealth badly - no backstab)

No. you have to avoid leveling up, if you want to spend the proficiency point later and then level up 2-3 levels at once. (as for F->T dual to get grand mastery)
