Gonna be blunt: clubs are the best! And you can even use them as kitchen utilities to boot.

Yeah, what @Quartz said. Although I wish there were some high-damage blunt weapons in the game, like a greathammer or heavy flail as an alternative to two-handed swords and halberds.

I prefer this because there are some very useful arrows available.

Blunt for melee, piercing for ranged. Gimme a mace and some darts!

Though crushing damage is the most effective - personally I tend to choose eastern weapons for my characters. The question of this poll is what you like more. I like scimitars a lot so I vote for slashing. Katanas are very effective in BG2 - they also have slashing damage.
But if it's the question about effectiveness then blunt weapons all the way. Just look at any armor's AC against different types of weapons... The biggest back stab damage comes with a staff. The best (probably) weapon in BG2 is FoA. The stupifier mace in BG:EE is effective.
But even knowing all these pluses I still try to RP the style I like the most. This game is all about role-playing in the first place. That's why I choose a slashing damage.

Crushing damage is by far the most effective throughout the series, it is effective against skeletons, mustard jellies, clay golems, etc. And like Quartz said, it is better to hit against most armors. Clerics are supposed to be gimped by being restricted to type B weapons, but they can employ Flail of the Ages, Crom Faeyr, etc. top tier weapons that are always useful.

This comes down to my choice of characters both PC and NPC, I dig druids and clerics,

I wish I could vote twice...or three times.
I mostly like to play Thieves (with swords (slashing) or daggers (piercing)) or Monks (crushing)...
But on other classes I played, they usually wielded swords or scimitars...so therefore my choice.

I usually end up with slashing but I prefer blunts since you can hurt anything with them. There are a lot of stuffs that are highly slashing resistant
