can't undestimate how much you can stay toe-to-toe with an enemy just for having a shield on!

True. Hell, with the proper shield and pre-battle buffs, you can even turn Aerie into a front line fighter.

I like to dispense buffs and heal, when needed.
Otherwise, I'm playing "DISORIENT!" with everybody and firing at targets.

Magic, if well used, can really turn the tide of a battle. When I play I usually order the fighters to jump in the fray and punch hard, but it's on the spellcaster I really rely. I concentrate on them and spend most of my time during a battle controlling them, since they can do so many different things and achieve different effects. They are much more fun to play than fighters, they have a larger variety of techniques and strategies.
    And fireballs are awesome XD

A majority of fights can be nicely brute forced with well built, high APR front liners. For the few fights that can't spells and such become important but this is an exception to the normal steam roll experience that the above group can create.

Sword and Board all the way.

I play lots of different styles. It all depends on the class or kit and overall character build. I guess if I had to choose just one thing on that list as most favorite, it would be casting spells. But that said, I think I enjoy most of all about an even mix of spellcasting and melee (dual-wielding), such as with a Fighter/Mage. And that's not a poll option.

I go either Longsword or Composite Longbow. That's just how I roll.

I like sword and board. Its got a good mix of defense and offense. With a higher ac against missile weapons, you can rush through enemies and defeat them with ease. The offense is in taking down melee guys while archers miss your char, that's something you cant do with a onehanded or twohanded blade.

Thiiiis. I just have my melee folks go at the enemy, and then have my spellcasters do the rest! ...archers are always in "Shut That Spellcaster Up Mode".
