I have reroll-itis, i need help with comming up with a char I can stick with!

Title gets the gist of it.. I always end up rerolling and I'm sick of it.

So what I'd actually like to do is get some input from you guys on what I should try next.

Things to rule out:
Halflings
Gnomes
Dwarves
Clerics (unless there's a mod out there for BG:EE that gives all classes access to all weapons, please tip me xD)
Bards

Historically I have played a lot of Paladins, Thieves and Fighter/Thief combos. Two-handers and dual-wielding respectively.

It is a big bonus if suggested char concept involves fighters, as that's the Stronghold in Bg2 i enjoy the most, but it is certainly not a must.

I have also tended towards playing characters that can go unbuffed through most encounters, albeit bosses and tougher fights such as the femme fatales after Nashkel mines or dem dirty dozen in sewers of Amn are alright to need buffs for.

Help me.. please! Constant rerolls are killing this amazing game (series) for me!

Sounds like a job for the Dwarven defender.
edit: Oh. Rule out. Nevermind then anti-dwarf person. Maybe berserker/Barb? They're both pretty good at unbuffed frontlining.

I love re-rolling characters :P But I understand how it can be annoying. My first run though of SOA I was a ranger. That kicked a lot of ass with celestial fury and flail of ages. But a barbarian or monk could be a fun choice as well. :)

My best tip is to create a caster. They keep growing in power throughout the game and with a large spell selection they get a variety of tools to mix up the way you play when you feel like it. As a melee class, after the first couple of levels it's just more of autoattack with no variation and very few options to mix things up. Whenever I get a hankering for rerolling halfway through a game, this is very often the case.

Sorry, but I read the title and read it as "I have reroll-tits"? And I was like Whuut?

Seriously though. Try Blackguard. That seems close enough to what the OP likes while being different. Ya get all of the 'fighter' type things and some nice abilities too boot. And if the OP is normally used to playing 'Goodie-Goodies' based on the comment about playing a lot of Paladins.

Step 1: Start a multiplayer game.
Step 2: Create 6 unique characters all at the same time.
    Step 3: Play the game
Step 4: When you encounter an NPC you would like to take along. Export the character you most want to replace (or the character you are having the least amount of fun with) and then replace them from the group. Exporting them will keep their current items and lvl if you wish to play with them again in the past.
Step 5: Repeat step 4 until you only have one PC left.
Step 6: Send me a cheque or money order for curing rerollitis

    Pros:
-get tired of rerolling after 6th PC.
-get to try out multiple builds all at the same time
-one of the reasons why most people have rerollitis is not due to their PC, but due to the same NPCs they take along. The strategy from one character is replaced but a good chunk of is still your standard tactics that you have developed over at least the last year.

    Cons:
-Less XP in the beginning as 6 characters are sharing it right away
-Dream sequences will only happen for the first PC. All others get diddly.

So, I know you said you didn't want to play bards, and I get that, but let me talk to you about bards. If I'm guessing correctly, you don't want to play a bard because you don't want to be some dandy strumming a lute in the back of the party, passively buffing while the rest of the party goes off and does interesting things. Believe me, I empathize completely. The last thing I want my PC to be is a buff-bot. Which is why I think you should play a blade. It's the bard kit for the player who wants to be in the thick of things hurling spells, tanking hits, and cleaving monsters left and right like some hero out of nordic myth. Pump your physical stats, pick up a longbow to start with, then build towards two-weapon fighting. Pick up the spells Find Familiar, Armor, Mirror Image, and eventually Stoneskin, and you'll be well on your way to the best tank you've ever played. It might be a tad buff-heavy for your taste, but most of them you can just cast at the beginning of the day and forget about them (except Mirror Image, which you can just quickly pop at the start of combat). All in all, I think you'd find the blade an interesting change from the fighters you're used to playing. Same wade-into-combat-and-mess-things-up playstyle, but with oh so much more in your arsenal to play with.

Failing that, it turns out the archer ranger kit is really fun. Like a kensai from thirty feet away. Just don't go with longbows. They're powerful in BG1, but they are a trap that will screw you in BG2. By the end of TOB you'll have enough proficiencies to dig yourself out of the longbow hole, but still, not worth it.

Huh! Quite a few interesting ideas here.. @Jarrakul I'm sorry but bard will never happen again. I played a Blade through most of Bg:ee.. not for me.

I'm tempted to try a stalker.. or archer.

Stalker with single weapon style and bow seems a little weird though, with the two free DW pips.

Barbarian could be fun too.. although i don't see much reason for Barbs/pure fighter.. I mean.. if you're lvl 20 or lvl 40 doesn't even matter, you'll still just hit things and go "orc smash! orc smash!" xD

Fighter/Priest of Talos is quite fun. Some EEkeeper is needed but the special priests are not that overpowered ;)

Killed Tarnesh with one command and one lighting bolt.

Elf fighter/thief or fighter/mage are some of my favorites. In both cases you can use bows with great effectiveness, and in the case of the f/t you can use longswords for backstabbing and general fighting. Having a good AC is still valid in BGEE, so with a high dex the f/t can holds its own in melee combat where needed. With some defensive buff spells the f/m becomes a monster at melee later on.
  • KhyronKhyron Member Posts: 635
Yeah.. F/M is another one of my current ideas.. I do love having Fireshield Red/Blue, Stoneskin and then just gib everything.. >.<.. low hp is somewhat a concern.. and lack of good armors in Bg2 (save for Veccna robe or killing a certain shadow thief)

I think Archer might be what I end up trying.. albeit, I don't particularly fancy having a ranged Charname.

Derailing my own topic a bit: Am I the only one to feel that playing a support/ranged char is sort of lame, concidering you're supposed to be a supreme being and child of Bhaal? Just look at your advesaries later on.. they're all murder on legs.. hehe.

    Anyway.. here's what I've got on my thoughts atm;

    Archer
Fighter dualed to thief, focus on Singlehanded, Longsword and a bow. (Actually not DW at all for once..)
    Fighter/Mage, DW'ing longswords/scimitars
Fighter/Druid, Anyone got experience with this? Jaheira seems quite lackluster tbh.. always found Anomen to be supreme in comparisin.

Stalker. Singlehanded + bow? or would you DW?

Fighter dualed to Cleric, EEKeeper to set to that cleric kit that gets the +4 sword..? Could be fun, yes?
(Does this sword get Strength damage bonus, or is it a flat 1D8?)

    So many choices..

don't use the helm kit...just don't. priest of lathander is so much better, dualled from fighter you'll end up with an insane amount of APR (even without hasting) by the end of ToB and by the end of bg:ee you're looking at 5 APR (dual wielding, boon of lathander, hasted, GM)

if you don't want to go so OP, a kensai half-orc wielding two handed swords?

Half-orc Cleric/Thief: Use a quarterstaff (yes) to backstab. Aule's Staff and Staff of Striking or both very high damage dealing weapons. With 19 Str (20 plus tome) and using Draw Upon Holy Might your backstabs will be astonishing.

Fighter/Mage: There are number of ways to do this, but I prefer a multi-class dual-wielder in either Long Swords or Scimitars who wears no armor and casts spells upon sighting enemies and also during the heat of battle. Use Armor, Shield, and a Familiar to increase HP. You'll suffer a bit of damage from time to time, but nothing you can't easily handle with healing potions. In the meantime it's fun to debilitate enemies with spells while you're also whittling them down on the front line. I prefer spells that render enemies helpless such as Sleep, Blindness, Charm (make enemies attack their own party), Glitterdust, Ray of Enfeeblement (encumbers heavily armored enemy tanks), Horror, Hold Person, and Slow.

i see your half-orc c/t and raise you a gnome c/t. 19 strength (to 20 with tome) up to 22 with DuHM plus epic saving throws and better thief skills and by the time you reach bg2, 25 strength is easy to achieve anyway! the only thing you miss out on is a 3rd and 5th spell

    Swashbuckler!!

@Khyron: Fair enough about the blade. You gave it a try and it wasn't your thing. I'm just glad you didn't write it off before seeing how it played. As for your distaste of support/archer PCs... I'm with you on the support, but I don't think you realize just how much death incarnate the archer kit is. Trust me, while you won't be up there taking hits, you'll be dishing it out with the best of them.

If you enjoy the backstabbing on your thieves, you'll probably enjoy the stalker too.

The mod that lets clerics use any weapon is called "Ashes of Ember". I doubt it works in BG:EE, though. Has anyone tried it?
  • ambrennanambrennan Member Posts: 173
I'd be concerned about the long-term viability of the archer; iirc enemies will become increasingly resistant or outright immune to projectile weapons.
  • JarrakulJarrakul Member Posts: 2,029
Other than helmed and battle horrors, which are quite rare, there's nothing I'm aware of that's outright immune to ranged weapons (except clay golems, I suppose, but they're immune to a lot of things). There are a number of creatures in BG2 that it's hard to hurt just because the ammo doesn't have enough plusses, but the Shortbow of Gesen and the Firetooth crossbow both hit as at least +4. Which, incidentally, is why longbows are a bad idea.

That is very useful info! I have once before tried an archer and to my dismay, i did a whole lot of 0 damage.. Gesen just might do the trick. I feel a long-term char concept comming up xD

I have what you have. The best way I combat this disease nowadays is by creating a character most like myself. I give myself stats what I would consider realistic to myself, + a couple of extra points for godliness. I respond to people the way I would respond to people in RL and act the way I would in every day situations.

Try not to be truthful about it. Would you really be a religious, zealous paladin do-gooder, accepting all quests for no money? Would you really be a psychotic and malicious killer? Do you break many laws?

Try taking the online DnD tests to discover what alignment and class you are. Be truthful and honest and the test should be quite accurate. I ended up being a True Neutral Bard in one test and a True Neutral Swashbuckler in another. Probably the most right in DnD terms.

I find this way of playing the most fun, and I rarely restart if I play this way.

I misread Khyron's post and thought he was considering an archer with sword and longbow
  • KhyronKhyron Member Posts: 635
Right, so I have decided on a char concept that is both up my alley, something i've sort of tried before.. but with a twist.

    Elf
    Fighter/Thief

    Singleweapon style
Katana (To use katana is just another way to promote using ranged weap, due to them being few and far between)
    Shortbow

Will use later pips to get crossbow or a blunt melee weapon.
(Firetooth is just so much fail.. awesome weapon at 1apr.. wtf xD)

I could do a fighter dualed to thief to get grand mastery in shortbow, but I just don't wanna play a humie anymore.

    I still say Swashbuckler :)
