Ahh, Faldorn.

LiggLigg Member Posts: 187
She was always a complete turkey in vanilla BG1. But now she's the darling of my game. I'm halfway through a game that uses generally unpopular characters, (Garrick, Quayle). I raced through the first 4 chapters to the city to get the party together ASAP. If my character wasn't a cleric/thief halfling I would have picked up Tiax. I'm now grinding through the wilderness. I thought Faldorn would be a 'challenge'. But she's great. Insects, Woodland Beings, Entangle, Lightning, Ankheg armour...

I'm going to use her level 5 Magic Resistance spell to lower Drizzt's MR to 19. And then doom and some insects and some Call lightning. In fact my entire 'Kill Driz' strategy relies on Faldorn.

Still looks a real munter though.

Plus her dread wolf is a pretty good summon :)

Until I gave her an honest play through with tutu, I also disliked the Druid. She's pretty solid though as a spellcaster, but bad for a front liner. I much prefer her to jaheira, the spellcaster that forgot to have useful spells... On the plus side, the terrible choices make her piddley slot count irrelevant.

I'm still laughing at that one. You never know, with that 15 Charisma, she might just be a butterface.

Faldorn is in the same spot as most 'unpopular' NPC's in Baldur's gate. They are actually quite decent if you sit down and take a look at them. On paper they might not look like much, but once you have them there out in the wilderness with you and notice how all those small perks come to use, they aren't that bad. Even Garrick has his uses in this game.

    *shrug*
More for me. I hear Druids really know how to Handle the Animal, and get an Orison out of you. I'm finding it difficult to Resist Nature's Lure. She can use her Timeless Body to make me make A Thousand Faces as we form a Nature Bond any time.

I've always felt that Faldorn's portrait was showing her with a snarl, and that actually she might be very pretty... at least, when she's asleep and not screaming at anyone about nature.

    A man hunter?

(Obviously I used Google, but hehe, it's a slang I never heard of before.

She probably is pretty. I really don't mind how she looks, I was just going for a cheap joke. Actually I like her picture. She's clearly in mid-transformation into a beast, and she's surrounded by little sparkles. It's the only portrait that shows magic is happening. I think it's one of the more successful fantasy portraits.

I like how the bear looks like it's like, "Is she dead? D:?" and the wolf is like, "sup :D".

Yeah... they were supposed to have been watching over her while she slept, but the wolf inparticular I thought came out a little goofy looking. :)

The bear is saying, 'Duh, gee George. Is the priddy lady gonna wake up? I want her to tell me all about the liddle bunny rabbits."
And the wolf is staring into his imaginary film camera and sighing.

That's why you never let Imoen cast Druid spells from scrolls. :| "OH HI LET ME CAST AWAKEN ON THESE ANIMALS!"

But wouldn't that be Comeliness. D: /InsectSwarm'd NOT PALMETTO BUGS

Maybe Faldorn has excellent people skills!
"Wow, I slept great last night, how about you, Faldorn?"
    "NATURE IS ALL."
"Oh, right back at you, Faldorn! Right. Back. At. You. Say, have you seen Quayle?"
    "*grunt!*"
    " :3 "
Flying Palmetto Roaches are the worst! *casts Exterminate*

You're right. I was referring more to Comeliness than Charisma. I think it's an important distinction that shouldn't have been thrown out when 2e core rules came about. I don't like regarding Charisma as an average of Charisma and Comeliness. I like the possibility of having a character with great beauty and poor personal magnetism/leadership ability (and vice versa) or with high/low scores in both.

Granted, there is a fair amount of subjectivity as to what are considered attractive traits in different societies and cultures, but those differences were accounted for somewhat with the racial bonus/penalty modifiers (using humans as the standard of comparison, as always).

Augh I know they used to hiss at my cat, and she'd eat them. I also had a cat that ate a bee. "Lucky, no! Luckyyyyyy, Luuuucky!" " :3? Want some?" "Lucky, if that thing stings you when you poop it out, only you're to blame." "Let's play ice cubes!"

Yep. :/ Now the only place you'll find Comeliness/Appearance/Appeal, now, is in GURPS derivatives, adult-oriented systems or supplements, and the odd homebrew. At the same time, I think Comeliness was sort of "dude, no", because of the excellent idea, and somewhat terrible execution. I did like the synergy with Charisma, though. It'd be perfect for the characters that I play in P&P games that are attractive, but who have terrible social skills. "He's gorgeous -- looks like Fabio, but ye gods, is he awkward when he isn't fighting." "She's really pretty. Combines the best of her elven and human parents, but she's the last person you'd want to break bad news to Farmer Brun about his son."
But boy, oh boy, it'd make for some hilarious arguments and game table conversations!

@SCARY_WIZARD Lol, sounds like the conversations I've had with my own cat, except it's usually Anolis.

It would be hard to implement Comeliness in BG, although it would add some interesting context to character development. It would be interesting to see what Comeliness scores people would give to BG's NPCs, especially the differences in portraits from BG to BG2. I think Viconia went from a 12 in BG to an 18 in BG2.

Never seen one of these things in my life. From the looks of things I'm happy for it.

Who looks mostly likely to kill you in your sleep: Faldorn or Montaron? *-)

Faldorn looks like she'd kill you while you are awake. Montaron doesn't really look like he'd do much of anything, though Xvar looks like he'd kill you in your sleep just for some necromantic experiments.

...yeah, Garrick has a use as a walking pair of Glasses of Identification that can also use wands! I'd rather have Biff! ;)

Edwin took the opposite approach. Not to say his BG portrait makes him a male model (tho it is one of my favs from BG and I used it for a few PCs), but BG 2 Edwin is rather hideous.

Which is strange, given that his BGII face model is delicious.

And this is coming from a straight man :P

Which is a great example of how subjective beauty can be. I'm much more of a fan of his BG1 portrait. It's much more distinguished and sinister, while the BG2 one feels kind of cartoonish. And why is his robe almost pink in the BG2 portrait? And what's the deal with everyone having ring clips in their hair? I demand answers here! :P

Edwin's 10 CHA represents his jerk-ass, d-bag personality. I'd probably give him a COM of 15 (BG1 portrait, that is).

I agree that Edwin's BG2 portrait doesn't suit him. Hells, it looks positively friendly to me. I used it for my NG mage CHARNAME once.

I also prefer his BG1 portrait because I think the BG1 portraits look awesome whereas yes, a lot of the BGII ones feel slightly cartoonish. Which also shows how subjective taste in art form is, because I know some people (like my sister) prefer the BGII portraits.

All the piercings *do* legitimately bother me in BGII. Doesn't literally *everyone* have at least one piercing? That's a little ridiculous, haha.

I agree with that; thing is, his BG1 portraits looks too sinister for his personality, because he's a wannabe bad guy who actually isn't that horrible of a person by nature, he just tries to force himself to be a badass. ...Or maybe that's the point entirely. LOL
