I guess some classic reading is in order here

    http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0046/0046_01.ASP

Oh, the chick website. I had some great laughs reading it.
That is until I realised that it is not a satire site, and that they are seriously stating their opinion in these comics.
Now I am disturbed and slightly scared.

Exactly my thoughts, the whole website and their creators are quite disturbing, I suggest DDoS attack.

@blackchimes, I've seen that before, but I had forgotten it. Thanks for posting it, because it's very pertinent to the topic.

One of the lies in it is that tabletop D&D groups banish anyone whose character dies. That's offensively untrue. If your character dies, you just roll up another one and start playing again. The DM will make up some kind of story event to justify your new character being there, and you go right back to playing.

Another absolutely ridiculous lie in it is that all DM's are really pagan or wiccan coven masters who are using the game to seek out new recruits for their covens.

It also contains a paranoid suggestion that "witches" can actually cast mind-control spells in real life. Is the author still living in 16th century Salem?

I doubt anyone here would actually take that tract seriously, but I thought I should go ahead and point out the falsehoods in it just in case somebody would read that and actually think anything in it is true. ;)

Yes, CHARNAME is a direct descendant of Bhaal
No, CHARNAME may possibly not follow the father's intentions.

It depends on how you roleplay CHARNAME.

For newbies, CHARNAME is your main character.

Seems a legit excuse to me

Is 'fighting a zombie" a euphemism for masturbation?

I've read some of the articles on that site. I was tempted to post some responses to things, but... really, giving a little of psychology, anthropology, and even the bible to these people, it's like... giving a dictionary to someone who can't understand context.

Rest assured, there is little chance of me confusing a game that has dragons, trolls, drow, wingless winged elves, and gods, with real life. The people I kill in real life tend to smell more, for one thing.

Whow, that's the worst comic I've read in my whole life, what a piece of utter crap!

And that just after belgarathmth's wonderful story. My senses get messed up.

"Of course, just like everything else, some people (young or otherwise) will say, 'Those people were just weird or losers to begin with. I'm too together to fall into stuff like that. It's just a game!' Yeah, and an H-bomb is just a firecracker! Like the people who think they can play around with crack or pre-marital sex and not get burned by death, AIDS or pregnancy, the person who thinks they can mess with D&D without getting burnt is whistling in the dark. The evidence is definitely stacked against them! The game is too carefully crafted a trap for many people to elude."

We'll just see what my thief's trap detection and disabling abilities have to say about that.

Seriously though, the article that @SirK8 linked to is, well, insane. Articles like these always justify my refusal to believe anything I read or hear without some independent research on the information's validity. We all end up believing things we shouldn't, it's important to not blindly believe anything. It's not too surprising that Christians with no knowledge of D&D would believe the lies spread about it by those that they regard as spiritual authorities.

::Walks off into the darkness, whistling::

It's a really appalling trick of fearmongering that they do (example: http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0096/0096_01.asp). If you're prone to easily believing and read that shit you might become a superstitious christian full of fear of demons, of hell, of the outside world, with a real distorted worldview that's totally incongruent with the happy faces they show on the side. Scary is this one as well: "Statistics have shown that the number of people who accept Jesus falls off sharply after early teens. For a 70-year-old to get saved is very rare. So, we need to reach them as early as possible and Tim Berends' testimony proves that it can be done. " http://www.chick.com/bc/2010/children.asp

And I always thought some of the porn I see on the net is quite sick, this kind of religion is even sicker!

Actually Bhaal, Baal, and Ba'al are all different but based on the same idea of a "immortal" being (even in BG his essence lives on so don't pull the "he's not immortal, he died bs"). The main idea is that they're evil. Bhaal is a god from the Forgotten Realms set, Baal is a demon whose name is used through many different cultures and religions (like in Diablo 2:ToD), Ba'al is the stargate character. Also note, that Baal was once a LONG time ago used as a term to show your superiors respect.

    @Son_of_Imoen - Ok, I'm confused, so was this guy playing D&D or.... http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0096/0096_01.asp :D

@SirK8 not sure if you meant to "@" me or Son_of_Imoen (who posted that), but... that guy went to hell for being a non-believer. Except, then, God brought him back and gave him a second chance so that Chick tracts could turn his story into a way to terrify people into believing.

Also, yes, he was most likely playing D&D (and obviously a practicing sorcerer, as are all D&D players), drinking wine, having sexual relations with consenting members of his own sex, getting tattoos, tolerating the company of women that speak in the church and don't fully submit to their husbands (in the same fashion as their husbands are expected to submit to God), and various other acts deemed evil by good old Christianity.

Lovely story by the way: Jesus created hell (with all it's fire, brimstone and weeping), heaven is shut for practically everybody, even for the smallest of 'sin's (loving the most dearest person to you in the world with all your heart - if he/she is the same sex?). And there I was thinking God is a God of love. And then to forgive us - he who condemned all those people to damnation should forgive us - how about forgiving Him? need BLOOD to be shed and it is done by the slaying of his son. Accept the one who created Hell as your Lord, and then you find relief and joy? A highly incredulous story. Any RPG-writer can write a better story.

As to Satan in the topic title, with a search on the Wizards of the Coast forum I found this titbit of information: "Yes, an issue of Dragon magazine in 1979 (then reprinted in Best of Dragon 2) did indeed write up Satan, Belial & Astaroth as 1E monsters." Apparently, he since only appeared as a thought from users who created stats of Satan on the forum, but those topics always get closed, the stance of WotC being: "D&D does not involve direct references to current real-world religions. That would be not only offensive, but create bad PR for the D&D brans, as well as everyone who plays it." (some lines above the first comment). http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/28931463/Is_satan_In_DD?post_num=6#516551757

Personally, I think people are too afraid to step onto religious toes and some serious butt-kicking needs to be done to shake up some 'foundations' that are all too solid, as in stubborn and irrational, but seeing the world as it is, with religious people high and mighty in control and easily pissed-off, I can understand (but that's precisely the reason some butt-kicking needs to be done, right Boo?).

Or perhaps people can quit worrying about what someone else might believe since other people's beliefs are their own business.

Back in college there were a couple of people in our gaming group who would start with us on Friday evening, game though much of Saturday, head to church on Sunday morning, then finish our session that afternoon. No one raised a fuss and no one cared.
