max memorized spells for lvl 1 specialist mage?

I created an Invoker and I can only memorize 2 spells, but I read another post that said the max spells was 6 for a specialist mage...am I missing something?

Thanks!

You'll get more as you level up, don't worry :)

So, 2 is correct for a lvl 1 specialist mage? It's been a few years since I played D&D, but that was what I remembered...I was just confused by the other post I saw that said they get 6. (or maybe they meant 6 lvl 1 spells after they'd maxed their character lvl of 8 or 9?)

2 is correct. You'll get 6 (or 5 for non-specialist mages) starting at level 13, see chart.

You need to be patient with your casters. They are quite weak in most of BG 1, but in BG 2, they absolutely dominate battles.

I hope so...right now I feel like the water-boy being leveled by the real adventurers...:-)

I have to say though - I really like this game! The fights can be rough with a bunch of lvl 1 characters (as they should be), and the dialogue in the game is pretty funny at times (I just finished the talking chicken quest last night :P).

Yeah that's totally normal. There are a few very useful low level spells that I didn't know to use (Sleep) back when I played, but even so, casters have so few spells that they are near useless at the lowest levels. My Fighter/Mage fought almost entirely as a poor fighter in BG 1, and I remember exploring dungeons with a 3-man bow team of Charname, Minsc and Imoen, protected by the shield of Khalid. Dynaheir was often more trouble than she was worth to try to keep her alive.

However by the endgame, she was a fairly potent caster, and crucial in my final nooby victory.

In BG 2 casters are totally awesome. And if u like BG 1, you're gonna love BG 2. For a start, there's a lot more dialogue.

Wands are where the bulk of your casting will come from, even at high levels. Your spell slots are best devoted to things like buffs or debuffs that can't be easily replicated or compensated for by wands (buffing a party with haste that lasts basically a whole dungeon is worth WAY more then just blasting 1 group with a fireball..and the difference between a wand of fire and a max strength fireball isn't big at all). You can also cast directly from scrolls if you have some spare copies or it's something you don't want to bother learning. (scrolls cast at equal to level 6 in BG1, so for about 2/3-ish of the game spells are actually stronger when cast from scrolls and still decent for emergencies even once you're over level 6. Wands on the other hand just have set effects, but tend to have a BUNCH of charges, 25-50 and cast instantly, so if used wisely, a single wand can easily last most or even all of the saga, and they're only uncommon early on...once you get access to Baldur's Gate there's shops that sell just about anything you could need).

Specialists are horribly gimped and barely implemented, I don't even bother, 1 extra spell per level just isn't worth it imo.

There's a ring hidden on the Friendly Arms Inn map that'll help you out. You'll need to use Tab to find it. Its outside the walls of the Inn.

There is also a second somewhere in baldur's gate. It is quite possible to memorize up to 20 lv. 1 spells (at least in vanilla) if you manage to find both of them. At that point a mage can even tear up BG mid-late game. 5d4+5 damage/round for 20 rounds? Um...very yes.

AFAIK, they don't stack in BGEE. However, a sorcerer gets 6 first level spells pretty quick (4th level) and can use one of the rings to become a magic missile machine (i.e., 12 per day).

Since this has nothing to do with the plot of the game or a quest of any kind its kind of a stretch calling anything here a spoiler. I mean is revealing useful spells for players to use a spoiler?

@elminster Many people consider tactics discussion as spoilers even if nothing about the game plot is exposed. That's the reason I moved the thread.

I won't derail the thread any further but I will take this to PM :)
