You could go for a conventional name with an unconventional abbreviation. A friend of mine is called Kit, shortened from Christopher, and my grandfather was Rex, shortened from Alexander.
This way when he grows up he can decide whether to use the cool name or the sensible one!
After yesterday's silliness, I'd like to offer a serious suggestion. Pick a name from a family member or a person that you and your wife really like. My first will be either Samuel James X or Samantha Jaimes X in tribute to my grandfather.
Cornino's idea of unconventional is very good and you can take it a step further. Give a boring old name a new twist. A few random I've seen...Beel, Joh, Phred, Steev, etc...

If you cannot say the words "Chief Justice of the United States" before or after your child's full name with a straight face and without it sounding like it belongs there, the name does not belong on your child.

What about the name ELRIC or maybe CORUM. I also thought about CONAN and some others like TURIN or THORIN. And what about KVOTHE??? JON, or maybe JIMMY (JAMES)?? If it were a girl I will suggest WILLHELMINA. Or just name him WILLIAM, and he'll have the WANT an acronym. Maybe WOTAN?? (ODINN in german).
