Ahh yes, good old useless Eldoth and his one use! If anyone has a tactic to make him actually worthwhile, please enlighten me! What does that Rabbit Foot actually DO though? I still don't know haha! Wow, I feel embarrassed for forgetting Viconia's considering she's like my favorite character.
Eldoth is a Bard. He gains levels faster for the purposes of spell effects based on character level (Chromatic Orb will be more dangerous in Eldoth's hands more quickly and he'll shoot more Magic Missiles, for instance), and with Bard song he's a walking, talking buff for the entire party.
@Thels well that's just the point. It's not in contrast, because "special" implies that you're a rarity, you have something that stands out. But many of the NPCs have other things that stand out as well. So you're not as special as you think you are, because everyone else has something (besides dialogue and a backstory) that adds something to the character.
It's kind of funny because if you really think about it... it shows a trade off if you're going for an all PC made party, because even though you made them and they're perfect for their class, there's something they can never have (Edwin will never cease to be the BEST pure class mage in the entire game). I remember my brother and I differed because I never played with a party only I made and he always did... Of course, he ALWAYS picked up Edwin
Ah, in that light. Yeah, in comparison to your buddies you're nothing special, no.
And, I dunno. Sure, it can be useful to build your entire party from scratch for full control, but that doesn't make it interesting. It's one of the reasons I never got into IWD, setting up 6 characters for yourself is just not that interesting. It's also my major gripe about LoG, for instance.
I played BG multiplayer, once. We both thought we needed to fill everything out, so we both created 3 NPCs. Then, as we noticed Imoen wanted to join the party despite the multiplayer mode, we immediately started over. Didn't last long, though. BG doesn't feel multiplayer friendly, with conversations initiated by one player pausing the game for all other players.
@Thels OH I DEFINITELY agree with you on that! Single player with the story line and roleplay makes this game like... 10x more interesting and enjoyable. But that's just for certain people. Other people, who are powergamers (like my older brother) would prefer to play at the standpoint of "beat the game as the most powerful as you can possibly be" and that is DEFINITELY possible if everything is constructed to your personal preferences.
I believe Haer'Dalis has ** in Short swords, something bards (nor blades) are allowed to normally have, no?
And I might be heavenly mistaken, but didn't Faldorn, a thief, have a * in Spears (which as a thief she can't use?) Maybe it was a nightmare, heck if I know XD
PC specials? How about the ability to not ever be ressurrected? Lol aside from that he also has the power of influence to bring 5 strangers to his call to fight and die for him even though his charisma is at 7!
At OP: It's not that you're not special, it's that you attract other special people, or on Xzar or Tiax's cases "special". :P It would be pretty boring to travel with a farm hand, a leatherworker and a miner. Imagine what riveting conversations a mage could have with them. ^_^
Methinks Simple Jack from Tropic Thunder would be fun to travel with. He was a "simple" farm hand.
Faldorn can Summon Dread Wolf: not so bad Coran have 20 dex: strong Edwin have additional 1st and 2nd Level Spells: strong Eldoth can create poison Arrows: strong (for another 'good' archer) Kagain have 20 con: strong Minsc have Berzerk: not so bad Safana: sexy ^^ Viconia have Drow Magic Resistance: strong (I hope it will be fixed, her resist to 'friendly spells') Xan have a Moonblade: not so bad Xzar: crazy ^^
You have 3 spells, depending on your alignment, potentially that could be 2 cure spells, 2 draw upon holy might and slow poison, or vampyric touch, fear and larloch's minor drain. Or a mix.
In BG2, he can turn into the Slayer.
He can get some stat boosts if i remember correctly. In BG2 for sure, in 1 i think it's only from tomes(so they don't count exactly), but i could be wrong.
That's it, but he has also one more ability too OP, he can mod himself and get whatever stats he wants, get other special abilities or even change his appearance at will or his portrait :P
oh of course, I never meant to suggest that the PC wasn't powerful in his own right. I just meant to show the greatness of this game by looking at the NPCs
You know what I liked about the Party members you could pick up, sometimes you just liked who they were but maybe not there class but it made the game interesting, Xzar is necromancer, which isnt my favourite mage class, we all know conjuration and illusion is the best specialist mage classes, however there was something awesome when you made xzar the anti-fear and crazy wizard which runs in with cold touch maybe dying and sometimes achieving that rare chill touch hit which makes enemies easier to hit. I he was always my suicide mad man, you could always rely on him to risk his life to completely damage as much enemies as possible, he sort of reminded me of the joker in the new Batman movies haha
I now have this image of my Character singing radiohead's Creep to the rest of the party. #I wish I was special, you're so very special. but I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo#

Well, alright ... but I've always had more success with my own bard to be honest.

wait, you make mention of xzar's power of crazy but not of minsc's power of crazy? xzar is normal crazy, misnc is special crazy. I would love to see a long drawn out conversation between the two trying to explain the universe to each other.

"Wait, are they more special than ME?"
Because, that would be preposterous
My character is feeling emo now, their day is ruined, their life in shambles.
