"Imoen is a THIEF, so I must clearly not put any items in her inventory in case she STEALS THEM."
"Cleric? What a dumb, boring-sounding name for an adventuring class. I am so never playing with one of those." (I veered off the beaten path on my first game and Viconia was the fifth NPC I ran into. I may have never played a single game without her.)
Related: "What would even be the point of playing a good/neutral cleric? All they can do is make undeads EXPLODE EN MASSE - charming undeads is way better!"
"This Edwin guy wants me to kill Dynaheir, the mage who my sister's using in her game? No way am I listening to him."
Also, it wasn't until late on in my second playthrough that I realised there was a way to exchange items other than dropping them on the ground and making another character stand on them to pick them up.
I remember believing an urban myth that said you shouldn't give CHARNAME a low Wisdom stat because it would make their AI/pathfinding worse. I almost wish BG was that sophisticated.
Edwin is the type of person who has genius-level intellect but doesn't really have a clue about how the world works. The type of character who constructs elaborate and foolproof plans in his mind that are then foiled by very simple everyday things that any average person would figure out, and then proceeds to blame the fools who fooled up his foolproof plan.
So you are saying if Edwin was a real person he'd be that guy who is a master at every video game, knows how to maximize every combination of spells in Baldur's Gate and is clearly very intellectually capable yet for some reason or the other is chronically unemployed?

I think a real life Edwin would be the excentric university professor who is respected by his peers for his academic accomplishments, but hated for his arrogance and bragging about them. Not quite real life, but I think Dr. Rodney McKay from Stargate Atlantis comes close; genius scientist, but also a giant jerk.

Quayle would be the professor who thinks he is well respected by his peers for his academic accomplishments, but is not. Imoen would be the 10th grade literature teacher who still has her students make dioramas and pretty posters for "book reports". Ajantis would be the strict math teacher who has trouble controlling unruly classes despite being an aspiring authoritarian. Garrick would be the incompetent art teacher. MInsc would be the over-enthusiastic gym teacher and football coach. Tiax would be the evil assistant principle who thinks he is the real principle.
Eldoth would be the drama teacher who plays all lead roles in school productions himself. Skie would be the bratty cheerleader who expects good grades simply for showing up.
Khalid would be the substitute teacher that gets no respect. Coran would be the young "cool" teacher that all the girls have a crush on. Safana would be the hot english techer that all the guys are hot for. Alora would be the typical overly-friendly lunchlady. Neera would be the crazy chemistry teacher who's experiments always make the fire alarm go off. Kivan would be the grumpy janitor that scares all the freshman.
Jaheira could be a biology teacher who insists on equality for parasites and gives bad grades for students who don't "respect all of nature's children equally". Radical hippie biology teacher.
I'm pretty sure Eldoth would just be the guy trying to sell weed to all the senior girls
Aerie would be the teacher's pet who always makes the Honor Roll. Haer-Dalis would be the Hipster Art Student. Xzar would be the crazy goth kid who shows up with slipknot shirts and facepaint. Monty would be in detention.... always. Xan would be the pessimistic principle who realizes this school is doomed
Shar-teel would be the star athlete who resents all the guys because there isn't a girl's football team and she's stuck playing a no-contact sport like volleyball. Viconia would be the punk girl with tons of piercings who loves to say shocking things to get a rise out of people and keeps getting sent home because her shirt has something rude. Mazzy would be the star student that they put on the front of all the newsletters.
Faldorn would be an "alternative" teacher who tries to convince parents to sign up the kids for "Politics explained by Pottery" and "Expressionistic Math in Dance".
*Takes notes for the inevitable Baldur's Gate High School fanfic*
Yeslick would be the wizened old history teacher that you shouldn't mess with. Kagain would be the economy professor, teaching children how to exploit the system. Korgan would be...fired.
Korgan would be the overly-aggressive security guard. Keldorn would be the concerned parent at the parent-teacher conference meetings. Kagain would teach Business Law. Noober would be that one student in every class who asks stupid questions.
The "Baldur's Gate High School" game is fun to read, but shouldn't it have its own thread? I never even would have seen it if I hadn't come in to this one to see what people were writing about mistakes they made when they first started playing Baldur's Gate.
I don't know if this counts, I believed Yoshimo and took him through every subquest in CH2 my first play through and was pretty pissed when I got betrayed because I could have given that exp to someone else...
I also thought heavier armor would provide mitigation as well as avoidance.

My Level 7 Undead Hunter should definitely attack this Lich in the Gate District... That's what he does best... What's Time Stop?... Huh? A Lich casting Prot. from Evil... weird... What's Gate.... Oh ye Gods, what the hell is that thing?!
Same as the OP, for my first (completed) game I played a half-elven Fighter-Mage, and was a little chagrined to discover that he couldn't cast while wearing armor. So he used only wands. I also had him in plate mail equipped a bow (I had read that bows ruled in BG).
I had created a custom party for that game and had a much better time with the Fighter-Thief. She was the standout character.
I too took a long time to notice the slide bar for thieving skills on level up. Just could not for the life of me understand why so many people wrote about how wonderful traps were with this or that fight. Ninety percent of the time you can’t even get one to set! One evening determination set in. I was going to get some set if I had to reload all night. When I eventually did get some set I was delighted with the results. But why in the world would anyone spend an hour trying to set traps before battle?........... What is this pull down thingy?................. Oh for heavens sake ……… sigh
Also, when I was a kid, I purchased ToB before SoA under the impression that 'Hey, ToB is cheaper, so it must be the sequal to the first BG whereas SoA is more expensive, so it must be newer.' I had to go back to the store to purchase SoA because I couldn't play ToB w/o it -.-
I rolled a mage/thief and didn't min/max because I wanted to 'play my character.' This was despite my friend's protestations at the time.
I also would try to improve my Wisdom to ensure my PC's would get a bonus to save vs. charm and spells (since that was in the Baldur's Gate manual). My predilection for a high charisma also prevented me from ever experiencing the famous NPC vs NPC battles...
Using only direct damage spells at all times.
Playing 2nd edition D&D really helped my understanding of the game, though.

Took me a while to find out that the quicksaves shows up at the top, and you can scroll through your saves.
Every potion, wand, and scroll must be saved for the final battle
