If Rasaad would be a Barbarian...

DarkDoggDarkDogg Member Posts: 598
Rasaad is the least popular EE NPC (not the worst one, but simple unpopular due to several factors) according to the community opinion (polls, topics etc.). But imagine if Rasaad would be a Barbarian class (the only class not represented in EE) in both BG1EE and BG2EE. Do you think he would be a much stronger and more popular NPC and the most important thing - interesting to play?
Or would you like too see a Barbarian EE NPC instead Rasaad the monk from the beginning?

Agree with @booinyoureyes. I'd love a barbarian NPC, but Rashaad is a monk and that's that. Chance for a DLC, perhaps?

This poll makes no sense. He's a monk. His character is a monk. If he was made into a barbarian he would not be Rasaad. He'd be an barbarian from Calimshan who joins a monk order and uses a broadsword. I mean... that would just be absurd.

If there would be a Barbarian instead of Rasaad, would he be more popular that the monk Rasaad? Because he's the only good alignet NPC from all 5.

I agree with Finneous about DLC. I'd love to see a barbarian NPC that makes sense. Its just that there is absolutely no reason it should have to ruin an established character

That entirely depends on whether he is well written, well voice acted, well implemented, etc. Basically I have no idea. I like Rasaad but I'd also like a barbarian NPC. We just don't know how it would turn out, but I'd assume it would most likely be decent. I'd like to see a bard as well.

I think maybe a lot of the intention of your poll didn't translate well.

It would have been cool to see Minsc turned into a Barbarian, though. I realize it couldn't be done due to the contractual obligations, but Minsc never made sense as a Ranger.

I think there's a difference between a Barbarian and a berserker. I could understand someone wanting him to be a berserker, but he's kind of a "berserk ranger" already. Plus he has an awesome animal companion that barbarians can't get. :)

I've seen many posts here about turning Rasaad into a cleric with SK or EE keeper. But I've never seen or heard that someone turned Neera or Dorn into clerics, monks or thiefs... Never did this myself though.

No doubt. Because IMO all EE NPCs are well written and voice acted.

I'd agree with adding a barbarian NPC (only after adding in a female halfling cleric with the leaftender kit) but Rasaad's storyline is already pretty established in both games. He's pretty clearly a monk. I just don't see how from a story standpoint you could justify him being a barbarian.

@elminster but would you like to see a barbarian NPC INSTEAD the monk Rasaad?
I don't think there will be any DLC NPCs in the future. maybe a Baeloth like NPC, easter egg NPC or so.

why would you need to get rid of Rasaad to have a barbarian NPC? Its like me going to your house and saying "Sorry, you can't have chicken for dinner. You better make meatloaf".

Barbarian is more of a "cultural" kit which I can see fitting Minsc pretty well. The Berserker's more "all-out" Rage ability might fit him better though- I can see either kit working better than Ranger. I just don't really care for Minsc's default Rage ability (way too prone to backfiring) and I think that his "Ranger-ness" is mainly tied to the fact that he has a pet, which is something that could fit with any kit.

I'm not complaining too hard, Minsc is still fine, this is just one of my "perfect Baldur's Gate game where nothing bugs me" fantasies.

@DarkDogg Asking if people would like X instead of Rasaad is nonsensical, since Rasaad is already in the game and there is no need to remove him to add something else. As I said, I'd love a barbarian NPC in addition to Rasaad.

People aren't loving up Rasaad very much, that's true. But he isn't easy to 'hate', I don't think. While he is nobody's favourite, I don't think he has a dedicated anti-fanbase the same way Neera and (certainly) Hexxat seem to.

Mitchfork, I definitely think a barbarian class requires a cultural heritage and not just using anger as a tool when fighting. Not sure if Rashemen are necessarily barbarians though (they normally fight barbarians actually)
I think the fact that Minsc was Dynaheir's guardian for a long journey through dangerous wilderness is at least a bit ranger-ish (or is it ranger-y?)

Hmm. Why not to ask people, if they are unhappy with him? Still it's just a hypothetical question.

I want to add GNOOOOOOMES, no Halflings @elminster, GNOOOMES!!!! They are much better, @Quartz @Anduin, come with Tiax to rule the world!!!!!
Hey, there is a barbarian like easter egg NPC

    IT IS TIAAAAX!!!
Kidding, his name is Wilson, Wilson the Bear, he is a grizzly bear NPC, he rocks.

At least we can get a truly original NPC, a Gnomish FIghter, who can be a total jerk and a nut job that wants you to do things and he gives you amazing rewards, then, you realize that he is a powerful Sorcerer and then he can become Death, DESTROYER OF WORLDS!!! as a F/S :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D hhehehhehehe, and he can be IDKWhat Jansen, to keep the tradition of mad gnomes.

HAIL ME, THE LORD OF CHAOS.

@DarkDogg If you wanted to play "what if", here's what I think. Rasaad is unpopular because he has bland, Joe Average ability scores and the monk class is so weak in BGEE. If we were a barbarian, he would be more useful in BGEE for sure. However, as for debating whether a barbarian character would be more popular the Rasaad the monk character isn't possible, since we cannot know how the barbarian character would turn out in the hands of the developers.

No, a Barbarian would be stronger for all of the first few levels, after which Rasaad the non-barbarian, who's actually kind of awesome, would catch up, surpass, and run a few rings around his Barbarian compatriot.

Oh, oh, I've shouldn't used a hammer on this thread, IT BROKE!
  • DarkDoggDarkDogg Member Posts: 598
@FinneousPJ do you think the devs failed one of the EE NPCs, so you don't trust them? I think even Baeloth is amazing. Neera is amazing, Hexxat is good, Dorn is o.k. Why the devs should fail with the barbarian NPC?

That's because cleric isn't completely incomparable with his personality, and monks are generally unuseful at BG1 levels.

If anyone was to be changed into barbarian, it would have to be Minsc.

I would like to see a barbarian NPC, but a barbarian with Rassaad's dialogue and quests would be just dumb.

The breaking threads have something to do with spoilers. I think Crevs broke it by not ending his spoiler [spoiler/]

No I'd rather see Rasaad/a monk. Barbarians are nice but I think Monks (especially Rasaad with his special abilities) are far more distinct as a class.
  • booinyoureyesbooinyoureyes Member Posts: 6,164
Either that or Rasaad used sun soulray on the thread
  • elminsterelminster Member, Developer Posts: 16,317
I think it was more likely a stunning fist from a non-kitted Rasaad.

Is there any particular reason a new Barbarian NPC would have to be male? Just saying.
  • booinyoureyesbooinyoureyes Member Posts: 6,164
crevs, stop roleplaying your God of Chaos thing! and try writing a spoiler again. but do it the right way. I broke another thread by doing an incorrect spoiler and then fixed it i think by doing that. or it just went to the next page.
