Overlooked banters/relationships among NPCs

There are a lot of banters between NPCs that get a lot of discussion - i.e: the enmity between Kivan and Viconia, or Jahiera/Khalid and Montaron/Xzar, or Coran's attempts to woo Safana. But what are some other intra-party relationships that don't get nearly as much attention?

Kivan and Branwen have always displayed a lot of admiration for each other. Kivan will tell her, "Your courage ashames the others," while Branwen will tell him, "You are a strong warrior. I respect that." I always would've liked to have seen a romance develop between these two - I think that they would be an ideal pairing, and we could finally see Kivan move on from the loss of Deheriana.

Faldorn has a lot of respect for Coran - she repeatedly tells him, "You have more wisdom than the others give you credit for." She's probably the only woman on the Sword Coast that ever liked Coran for his wisdom, LOL.

I've seen Coran tell Branwen that she is the most beautiful woman he's ever seen, and that her figure is "too fine to be risked adventuring." I imagine he probably says that to numerous other female NPCs as well.

When outside, Dynaheir will tell Quayle to "stand downwind" from her, because his stench makes it difficult for her to concentrate on casting spells.

Quayle will often make nasty or smartass remarks to Alora, to which Alora will reply, "Why are you so mean to me? I'm nice to you."

Viconia will repeatedly tell Shar-Teel that she is the only one in the party that she admires, but Shar-Teel will always reply, "Flattery will get you nowhere."

Shortly after creating this thread, I happen to come across this archived thread:

    http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/12045/npc-interaction-and-banter-guide-ok-finished/

...which apparently contains a comprehensive list of all NPC dialogues/banters. However, I'm finding that when I click on the smaller "spoiler" categories that are within the larger ones, it closes the larger category instead of opening up the smaller ones. Does anyone else come across this problem?

Quite a few of those one-liners are generic complements that can be given to a number of NPCs. Branwen's "You are a strong warrior. I respect that" can go to quite a few neutral or good aligned warrior types, for example.

BG1 had quite few non-specific banters for compliments, insults and so on, while BG2 only had more developed specific interactions.

@Silverstar - I've never heard this one, but now I'm very tempted to load up a game and test it.

*Edit* Who needs to be drunk? Jaheira or Khalid (or both)?
  • SilverstarSilverstar Member Posts: 2,207
Think it only needs to be Jaheira as she's the one who acts drunk though my entire party was intoxicated at the time.

How does one get intoxicated in BG? I mean, the obvious answer is to just drink tons of booze, but about how much do you need before you start to "feel" it?
  • SilverstarSilverstar Member Posts: 2,207
It varies depending on the character's Constitution. There's a small beer mug icon on their portrait as well as an "Intoxicated" status when they're drunk.

    Yes, I think everyone does.
What an ordure - I can't even quote the posts to see the source code.

Kivan and Viconia ... I just, FEEL the angry yet sexual tension mounting in the air when they exchange words.

While there is much I might say of the darthiir and his burning stare, @Quartz‌, perhaps the best course is to hold my tongue, in this instance. Let nobody say Viconia DeVir cannot muster discretion, when needed!

You realize now I have to go adventuring with my entire party constantly drunk just to see if there is any special drunk dialogue?

    Thankfully, this sounds fun.

The rare banter Jaheira may have with Khalid while drunk caught me completely off-guard a couple weeks ago. I have tried getting other characters drunk as well to see if there's more of those but no luck.

@Silverstar how did the banter go? I just tested it and the only one I got was the "insufferable" one, was that it?

Basically it was Jaheira being drunk-flirty and Khalid being all "Maybe you should calm down a bit?" type thing. Sadly I did not screenshot it. I've not seen many of the few banters that -are- in the first game though so maybe it's not a "drunk" banter at all and I've just never seen that particular one before. It wasn't very characteristically Jaheira though.

@Viconia_DeVir Please. When you and [CHARNAME] started to pursue one another, him talking down to you only caused you to chase him more. You like hearing nasty things. Thus, Kivan.

I must say, I admire the restraint that you show with that ignorant fool Kivan.

No matter how many times you remind him that you no longer worship Lolth, he still insists that you do. When he gets killed, you very discreetly say, "Kivan and I never really understood each other." If you were to be killed, he would probably say something like, "May Viconia's soul rot in hell!"

You've a keen eye for effect, jaluk, but the cause of such proves elusive. Strength, will, and ambition are traits that might be admired by Drow or rivvil alike, yet the demonstration is of little consequence when it comes through empty speech. Perhaps if the growling darthiir had the desire to test his mettle beyond his all-consuming, blinding vengeance... still, I'll not dwell on such things, and you may make of this musing answer what you will!

Now here speaks a discerning voice! You are to be commended, @SharGuidesMyHand‌ - though I might say such tiresome curses would not be limited to such joyful celebration of my demise! I do recall a vague grumbling beneath his breath on many an occasion, though I'll admit the wael had plenty a distant target beyond myself to draw his ire.

Does the CLUA command Ctrl+I actually increase the occurrence of BG:EE NPC banters? I've never tried it and won't have any time to play the game for a few weeks, but just curious, since I have read that it does.
  • KidCarnivalKidCarnival Member Posts: 3,747
It does, if you do it often enough. It will cycle through all animations and banters for which the conditions are met, so you also get a lot random hand gestures and default banters.
  • LemernisLemernis Member, Moderator Posts: 4,318
Hmm! Does it actually initiate fights?

    Thanks! :D

Excuse me while I start a Drunken BG1 run. >.>
Next time I go to fight Saravok I'm bringing some Dwarven ale to down before going into his headquarters.

Yes. I sometimes use it to speed up Zhents vs Harpers if I have a high charisma charname and want to get that rp part out of the way before the mines.

I looked over the jaheira dialogue files. Not sure still which one you mean. They do have a few back and forth banters but (at least from what I can tell) being drunk isn't a requirement of them. Basically she has "Khalid, my dear, 'twould take a sailor to untie that tongue." and "Is grass not made of blades? Do stars not shoot? Nature be well armed, and demands so of her servants!" with Khalid and then later responds to Khalid's response with "Insufferable?" or "Beautiful?".

First one is probably the one I had in mind, seems familiar.

Quayle will often make nasty or smartass remarks to Alora, to which Alora will reply, "Why are you so mean to me? I'm nice to you."

    ;___;

Alora will tell Shar-Teel to smile, and Shar-Teel will threaten to put her sword in Alora's stomach.
