The hardest battle...

DjimmyDjimmy Member Posts: 749
What was your hardest battle in Infinity Engine games(BG1, BG2, IWD1, IWD2, PS...)? And who do you think is the strongest(and probably the coolest) enemy. Some suggestions: Demogorgon, Kangaxx, Belhifet, Isair, Madae, Malavon Despana, Jon Irenicus, Melissan, Firkraag, Thaxll'ssillyia... perhaps the battle with the "chicks" before encountering Demogorgon...

Honestly, some of the early game areas in IWD2 like the goblin wardrums area are harder than most bosses.

Everything about difficulty is relative to level - end boss style fights tend to be much easier because you have many more spell options, magical effect and potions than so-called lesser battles at lower levels.

Vanilla game? Probably the Final seal (is that the name, I can't remember) in Watcher's Keep.

I agree, but in IWD 1 or 2 on Heart of Fury mode you can advance quickly in levels. This makes the game easier after the first 5 or 6 levels. I completed IDW 1 on HoF solo, and by the time I was on the Burial Isle, I was able to make the undead there literally to explode while walking amongst them(turn undead). Everything was fine but Belhifet was not that easy, no matter that I was at max level.

That demon in that basement in Ulgoth's Beard. Aec'Letec the Nabassu. That one.

My post relates to more like "the hardest battle I've ever had"

In vanillia BG1, first time playthrought - final battle with Sarevok. Difficulty of this battle was direct result of me being newbie, who not only never heard of micro but also never used all resources avalible, missed some really helpfull items etc. I've used Load Game spell for more than 20 times I think.

In vanillia BG2, first time playthrought - Firkraag vs 11lvl party. I've thought that I just have to buff myself up and charge at dragon (I did pre-cast protection from fire, thought) because I had thought "what can dragon do aside from heavy physical attacks + fire breath?". Well, I never saw stoneskin coming (didn't know about breach at the time), along with fear on my party, wing buffet, stun person and such nice tricks. He mopped the floor with me in less than half of minute! Goddamnit, durning my first playthrought I never managed to beat him in fair fight (as shamefull as it is). Instead I used cloudkill want to damage him heavily (I've used all charges) and followed it with AoE spells. Then I've used... Wand of Fear until I managed to scare him. Then mass attack with my lame party. Those old good times :). Hence Firkraag is my favourite dragon in BG series.

In modded BG2 - Improved Bodhi + Solaufein (shamefully, I never managed to play past this). Bodhi wasn't that much of a problem, but that overbuffed gary stu along with revenge spiders gave me a beating so bad, that I've gotten tired of Tactics Mod. Seriously, what Weimer was thinking when making Solaufein?

Icewind Dale - Boss battles were never really problem to me. Surprisingly, I've had more trouble to actually reach the boss, than fighting with him. Ice Giant chief? No reaload needed. That yuan-ti lady? Nope. Malavon? Tought, but never managed to kill anyone in my party. Belhifet was a joke.

Icewind Dale 2 - never beat the game, but again, important battles weren't that hard. They were fun, however.

    Edit: some spelling mistakes

Silver Dragon in the Underdark in BG2. And any time you can't get an adamantite golem stuck in a door frame and pelt it with arrows. :)

Hardest would be the trap leading up to cambion if you don't know it's there and it 1 shots you.

I always struggle when fighting Draconis, while in his dragon form. Few other battles have caused me such frustration, consumed so much of my time, and led to so many re-loads as the one with Draconis.

Interestingly, I've always found the battle with Abazigal relatively straightforward.

BG 1: Aec'Letec & the final battle (if not abusing monster summoning wands).

Oh and the first time I encountered the SCS version of that skeleton guy outside Ulcaster.

    BG 2: Twisted Rune.

I wouldn't call it a 'battle' per se, but I got stuck in Icewind Dale 2 in those mines you're supposed to time travel in (or whatever) on your way to the Severed Hand to face Isair and Madae. Never could get past that.

I really only play infinity engine games with mods, so ... improved Demogorgon or improved Sendai...
It's like the modders just wanted nerds to (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ over and over again...

Belhifet was the most challenging for me.

    Drizzt in BG1 :(

However, I've never fought Irenicus or Kangaxx. Firkraag wasn't that bad in my opinion.

Still haven't finish the final battle of IWD2.

my favorite battle in the bg series has to be in the circus tent in the promenade at the beginning of SoA. The fact that some of the enemies are illusions and you can cast dispel on them, that in the first room, the monsters are friendly and the humans are enemies. I had to figure out for the first time how to attack someone that wasn't aggressive. The human looking monsters would hit me but everything i went to click on them, it started dialog. It wasn't the hardest, but it had some challenge to it. The riddles, combat, *kissing the princess to turn her from an ogre to a beauty*, it's the moment i got addicted to the game
  • DjimmyDjimmy Member Posts: 749
@Bjjorick Yeah, I was kinda confused then I entered the tent for the first time. "Ogre which talks like a girl!?... I didn't drink anything at the inn, or did I?" :D

Icewind Dale and Icewind Dale 2 have some mean-ass fights, Baldur's Gate is fairly tame by comparison.

Icewind Dale's fire giants were tough as hell (considering you're lvl 15ish when you charge into groups of 3-4 of them) and the battle against Yxonomei the Marilith at lvl 5-6 isn't a cakewalk. The final fight of Trials of the Luremaster, with constantly spawning random high level adventurer-ghosts trying to kill you as you chase after the magicly protection, hasted, sometimes invisible, spellthrowing Luremaster is also a right bastard.
Icewind Dale 2 didn't pull any punches either, with teleporting goblin riders early in the game, fighting the avatar of a god (Goodbye Iyachtu Xzvim!) and two powerful halfdemons at the end. The first part of the end fight kicked my ass until I noticed there was a wizard offscreen summoning those frost giants, umber hulks and other monsters (which were in addition to the two half demons, a few respawning hellknights and a high level fighter, cleric and rogue).

I'll take Kangaxx any day over that!

@Djimmy "What kind of monster are you to have such a sweet voice?"
Yeah, i loved aerie, and she's still my favorite vanilla BG romance

Well, mine was trying to fight Sarevok, and forgot to equip my new armor.(I had full plate in my inventory and dropped my plate, but when I fought him I forgot to equip armor.

David Gaider's Improved Tougher Demogorgon and Abazigal are pretty tough fights, Demogorgon especially can be incredibly frustrating. And the best part is that when you finally do kill him he drops no loot what so ever....

Cool fights... I can name several. The final boss of Trials of the Luremaster is really fun, so is Malavon Despana. I also like the fight against Irenicus at the tree of life, and Sendai in Throne of Bhaal.

Aec'Letec in BG1 -- only beat him once and only on the easiest setting, without half of the party turning to ghouls. I cheat on that one now just to move the plot along...

Demogorgon in BG2 -- never beaten him, and I always skip him now. (The fight before that is quite hard enough as it is...)
  • ShrimpShrimp Member Posts: 142
Not the hardest one, but I'll try to nominate a fight that the above posters haven't already mentioned.

The fight against... the boss of the shadow thieves, whatever his name was, with Rogue Rebalancing. His henchmen have at least half a dozen potions of healing and invisibility, and spend the whole fight using hit-and-run tactics to backstab your arse, and the boss himself is a thief/illusionist with mislead or something, that he puts in a safe corner while he spams backstabs with 4 attacks per round...

Definitely the Ascension/Turnabout version of the final battle in "Throne of Bhaal": it was my sorcerer Bhaalspawn, Imoen, Jaheira, Sarevok, Edwin and Viconia (plus Bodhi, Tiax, Khalid and Alianna) versus the Five. It was a very long, very difficult battle - made worse by the fact that Amelyssan joined in as soon as I'd taken down Yaga-Shura and Balthazar.

Drizzt in BG1, to my shame. Twisted bleedin' Rune. Mindflayer area, for which I was woefully underprepared on my last playthrough because I had forgotten it was there, in the Underdark. Kangaxx was a breeze by comparison; Sunray is a beautiful thing.
