@meagloth Aren't friends AND charm person a bit superfluous, though?
Well, sometimes, friend only does so much. Every now and then you just need that little boost.
Why not Mass Charm and Mass Dominate?
Because 1. That not even a thing 2. There aren't any scrolls in the real, world, remember? You only get the first to spell you pick at character creation.
Although druids are severely lacking, compared to their Icewind Dale equivalants there (in ID you could roll an ELF for druid, plus they got more powerful spells there), if you rolled a smexy total of stats, know a thing or two about the games/items/mechanics, what you are doing long story short, a druid is your kinky pimp throughout the entire saga! Especially if we bother to count kits in! And honestly, the ONLY useful druid kit, which can do everything like a real druid, like a real jack of all trades and master of none, is none other, than the... AVENGER!
What will it be? Insects on enemy spellcaster? Ironskins and buffs on you? Extra mage spells? Melee expert transforms (sword spider and poisoned, baby wyvern that hits like an adult?)? Fire salamander for that trolling troll carcasses? Name it, and the kit gets it! Only drawbacks? No repelling undead, and no abusing, broken, 6 + mage level spells. Marry Aerie? Problem solved!
Druid would be nice indeed. Though, I think a Shapeshifter is where it would be at. Shapechange at level one, a werewolf at that. A heal spell among others, three of them per day if you have the wisdom.

But then You'd just be a werewolf, and you'd get burned at the stake.

They'll need sivler bullets to take you down, unless they go mad and throw a nuke at you before :P or napalm, or any other nasty chemical weapon.
@meagloth I'm a pretty big hippie in real life, but I also think that druids have more potential because they can fill more niche roles.
On a personal level it's mostly the shapeshifting that sells it for me - imagine the use of being able to become ANY animal. You can fly to wherever you need to be, swim across any body of water, or turn into a bear for self-defence reasons. Then, when you start getting into the spells, you get a lot more bonuses. Druids still get charm person/animal, so you've still got a lot of the "mind controlling" perks of the various magi. Plus, if you really don't like someone you can just blast them with lightning or cover them with bees!
I'm not too familiar with druids in PnP, but I think they typically get more weather controlling magic as well, which has a host of implications. I imagine the greatest archdruids could stop hurricanes or tornadoes and could redirect rain to where its needed most. The amount of ecological help you could also be to companies looking for PR boosts is innumerable. I'm also not sure how this would play into a druid's ethos, but if you helped regrow trees faster after logging then you could protect more old-growth forest by just having the newer trees be constantly cut down. It preserves the greater balance I guess.
Plus, as someone else noted, there's no scrolls or other magi in real life so you're on your own with that one. Druids presumably still have some sort of divine influence providing them with power so you'll always have some sort of guidance. I think that's really where druids and priests would shine, though. Can you imagine the power you would wield as the leader of a faith with real, tangible effects? I don't mean to knock anyone's religious beliefs, but I'm pretty sure you would see a real spike in interest if you could reliably replace modern medicine with prayer. Imagine the converts you would get and the way you could reshape the world just with a few words if you introduced an entirely new god to our world. If it's done right, I think a cleric in particular could convert large numbers of people. People post about how they could bend minds with their mage spells, but imagine what you could do when people freely offer you their hearts.
As a druid you'd also naturally have a high charisma, which means that if you did decide to try to lead the people to protecting nature you would have an easier time doing so without magic effects that wear off.

A "finger" of death speal would make this combo complete?
Bard for the sheer versatility in magic, combat, skills and knowledge. Plus ladies love you with that huge charisma.
Otherwise, 3.5E only Druid. Because of the insane versatility.
Also, my father is a forest ranger. Soooo... Bias. :P
(Bard was my second choice though...)
