The Most Devastating Druid Class

ElrandirElrandir Member Posts: 1,664
Halfway through my poll series already! This time it's the druids up for grabs, so who's your favorite? As always, this is for personal preference, and not to say what is the strongest kit. (the title's just for mild alliteration) That said, feel free to debate to your heart's content in the comments! I'm sure some of you will be happy to see that I did NOT repeat my blunder from last week, and the "Just show me the results" option IS here. Hopefully the mistake will not be made again.

Most excellent @Elrandir, faster than Chiktikka Fastpaws ;)

On topic: conceptually the Shapeshifter is one of the most appealing kits of all classes and kits to me, which is why they got my vote. Inspiration for a roleplayed playthrough with a Shapeshifter comes easily. I still want to play one but I'm unsure whether to go vanilla (which version is known to be underpowered) or the rebalanced version (which could be overpowered). Any recommendations anyone?

I could have also voted for the Avenger, in terms of actual gameplay a very versatile and balanced kit. One of the funnest I've played.

Its only underpowered in ToB (and maybe between the start of SoA and level 13). Otherwise its good.

Underpowered compared to many other kits of other classes? Or underpowered compared to other druids? Would the Shapeshifter's arsenal of spells by ToB make shapeshifting unnecessary anyway?

Underpowered compared to the other kits because their main advantage (Greater Werewolf form namely) has excellent AC by SoA standards, and still could certainly get good AC by ToB standards (and has better AC than the two druid HLA transformations), but it faces the problem of you using the druid progression table for thac0 and it not getting any kind of bonus to its base Thac0 at that point (like the druid HLA transformations get). Plus you can't replenish spell protections like Armor of Faith while shapeshifted. Totemic druid summons aren't strong stats wise at this stage but they at least do have the advantage of having many different immunities. Likewise while some of the Avengers spells aren't probably that useful in ToB (chain lightning for instance) you can probably still get some use out of some of them.

I would say that the arsenal certainly helps make its shapeshifting less relevant. This is basically the point where I transition Cernd for instance into being more of a caster. Once you factor in the HLA's druids get a bunch of great/good spells at level 7 (and only start with 6 slots for them).

Avenger is vastly easier to play from lvl 1 until ToB, but they dont benefit from their kit as much in ToB... Some great utility spells at low level make this kit incredibly easy compared to many classes. Its forms are handy too.

I have always wanted to try a high level dual of druid... I did one with a Berserker/rogue, which was still fun, but this would be excessive unless soloed. Iirc, you can nab 1 hla for a druid and still activate your powers. It wouldnt be a powergamey playthrough, but a fun one maybe with a solo and lots of patients. Might be more practical to dual out earlier, but giving up casting ability to get fighter hla alone seems... stupid. :s

Avenger. As close to a mage/druid as you can get in BG.

Webbing enemies, shifting to spider form, and then slaughtering the stuck fools is pure joy.

@elminster‌ what druid HLA are that great? Better than cleric I agree, but I'm curious whats worth having in your opinion. The summons arent bad, but I dont like the forms much in ToB.

Who would have thought that I'd vote for yet another base class?

Greater Elemental Summoning, Energy Blades, Globe of Blades (more useful if you are soloing), Summon Deva if you don't yet have a planatar (or are using that slot for another Time Stop/Improved Alacrity).

The forms are probably best used by a fighter/druid so that you can take advantage of fighter hlas (10 APR from greater whirlwind for instance). I wouldn't really use them otherwise.

I felt I don't have enough experience with druids (except Jaheira) to decide, so I chose vanilla... I must say my current avenger (BG1EE, still pre-city) is kinda fun but it's too early to tell if she'll be as cool as I hope she'll be. A few mage spells and extra shapes though? Not bad.

I like the idea of the shapeshifter as it seems pretty powerful, but I never took Cernd to a high enough level to find out.

The only experience I have with totemics are the few times I EEKeeper'd Jaheira into one.

Thinking about this does give me a nice RP idea. Vanilla fighter Charname (with a prediliction for scimitars) gets bitten by the first werewolf he/she encounters. *Poof* dual to shapeshifter.

Either the Shapeshifter or the Vanilla druid, IMO the penalties outweigh the benefits for the others.

Sorry? Penalty of the others? The Shapeshifter is the only one with a huge penalty.

The avenger loses out on 2 CON and STR. The CON isn't needed because 16 is the highest a druid can get for health and no single class druid will require a STR score higher than 16. There are many good leather armors so not losing out on much there.

The totemic druid loses out on what? Wolf and Bear form? I would never play the original druid when you can have the totemic druid and lose out on nothing.

Now the shapeshifter can't use ANY armor.

None of the druid kits have that bad weaknesses, but in my opinion the shapeshifter has the worst.

    I like druids
    I like summoners

to me avenger doesn't feel enough like a druid and the shapeshifter just doesn't appeal for rp

My first EE char was an Avenger.

    Tough one
Shapeshifters are probably most powerful in the first game, while Avengers are always good. I even like Totemic (I gave Jaheira this kit in one of my games and it was fun having all those animals)

Avenger by a whisker simply because Shapeshifter is kinda bugged out

Really though it is probably fighter/druid

i think the totem druid is just amazing, the summon bear just whomps on everything and im using him with a spear and he rarely seems to get below half health in a fight and he seems to hit consistently all for not being able to shapeshift....i can live with this
  • booinyoureyesbooinyoureyes Member Posts: 6,164
btw if you have that Improved Shapeshifting mod installed the shapeshifter becomes comically powerful

You guys gotta see how difficult is to kill an enemy Shapeshifter.

@CamDawg‌ I only ever played IWD when I was very young, so I don't know what made druids so powerful. What was it exactly?
  • DreadKhanDreadKhan Member Posts: 3,857
They also got an indoor call lightning, or was that only iwd2? The elementals were devastating though, very reliable.

Clerics got Righteous Wrath of the Faithful, which sounds totally cool, and was a big buff. Rangers had that bonus attack, which was nice.
