I feel the OP's pain. In the company where I work there are actually conflicting acronyms and you have to pay attention to what department they come out of or you will get some really funky information.

It is also interesting to note that Three Letter Acronym has it's own Three Letter Acronym (TLA).

Also, using acronyms just moves the hassle from the writer to the reader. And a writer who cares about his readers shouldn't do that.
