Confusing Inconsistency in Rejiek Hidesman (Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition) [Contains Spoilers]

So, I've come across something odd regarding the Rejiek Hidesman quest and storyline that I'm curious if you guys can clarify. After acquiring the Elephant Hide from the beggar, I confronted Rejiek and he admitted to the murders. He then attacked me, along with his three hired thugs, and my party easily wiped the floor with them. I then proceeded down the stairs and was confronted by one of the people working with Rejiek, who claims that no one will interrupt their operations or capture Rejiek. He then teleports away, leaving me to deal with the two Ghasts and Rune Assassins (which I promptly slaughtered).

Here's the kicker: both in the implications of the dialogue with this mage and the subsequent journal entry updates, it appears that Rejiek Hidesman had escaped the grasp of the law and fled to (I suspect) the Umar Hills. This is confusing to me, considering how I can clearly see his chunked remains on the first floor of his home, alongside the three thugs he hired to protect him.

Is this a bug or just an overlooked inconsistency in the storyline? Was I meant to kill Rejiek, and if not, why did he attack me and not flee down to his escape raft below? Can anyone here, developer or fellow player, explain this apparent issue to me? As far as I'm concerned, this is a bug, either with the storyline or with Rejiek stupidly sticking around to fight a fully-armed party of seasoned adventurers.

Any information on this would be helpful.

Don't worry about it. Finish the main quest (save imoen) and you'll be able to end the quest (although, maybe not in the way you would like to). And read the books\scrolls around the house. There are some interesting things said...

I know, it's not a big deal. It's still a bit frustrating for me, though. It makes me wonder if I did something wrong or if I messed up my chances of further encounters with Rejiek since he's now dead. (Does it?) I know this is an optional quest and thus not very important, but being the completionist that I am, I'm interested in playing it 'til the very end.

@Nokkenbuer are you using any mods? Normally when you confront Rejiek he should flee, not attack you.

    No, I'm not.

I think anyway that you misunderstood what happened. Rejiek flees always, and sometimes the mage goes with him. I doubt that you kille.

Well, I THINK that I killed him. I remember putting a lot of damage on him and attacking him first. Shortly thereafter, I saw chunks fly. After all was said and done, though, I checked the body count and only found three piles of loot. Unless Rejiek was carrying nothing, he disappeared quite masterfully. Come to think of it, though, he may have escaped. It all happened so fast and I was pretty certain I killed him, though.

How odd... I thought he had a minHP1 item...

I have an answer to the inconsistency but it is a HUGE spoiler in that plot line.

However, was that the first time you confronted Rejiek? He should be alone in his house the first time you talk to him.

Secondly, did you "argo" him first by attacking before he could say anything to you. That might of mucked up the script of him running down the stairs.

Yea from the looks of things he does.

Yea you can't kill him in the bridge district. He should run away and leave you with some thieves and ghouls, and a Mage, who you kill. He doesn't actually flee you umar though. If you want closure you should go to trademeet.(or umar if you're evil)

Yeah thanks everyone. I solved the quest and now suspect that I may have simply missed his escape due to the distractions of fighting the hirelings. I later confronted Rejiek Hidesman in Trademeet and wrapped it all up, though I am still lugging around this unfinished vest of human flesh. I assume that since I didn't follow the evil route, I'll never have that vest finished (not that I'd need or use it, anyway), so it's safe to throw it out, correct?

Yeah, You can throw it out. The armor you can make with it is pretty darn good though...

... but for the avoidance of doubt, @Nokkenbuer‌ is correct: you never get to complete it if you're following the Good path, the Human Flesh is (not surprisingly) for Evil characters only.

No armour fits an Evil druid so well.

If I want to use the armor I usually kill Adalon while she is in human form after I finish her quest. You don't have much time but it is definitely possible if you play your cards sequencers right.
