Turn Undead Tables

AbelAbel Member Posts: 785
There are two tables.
The first one is ordered by Level.
The second one by Name.
With Heart of Fury enabled, enemy creatures get twelve additional levels so it's harder to turn undead.

L = Creature Level; T = Level needed to Turn; D = to Destroy; H = Heart of Fury

BY LEVEL

    @Abel, in IWD:EE if sorcerer with 9 wisdom casts Lesser Wish and asks genie to protect party from undeads, genie summons a pack of vampires. What turn undead levels required for them?

    @Firecrow Sorry, I've no idea! You should be able to check that with Near Infinity though!

    @Abel, I'm trying to build up the Icewind Dale Wiki. May I add these tables there so that more people can find it and be benefited from this information? I'll be waiting for your approval. :)

    By the way, can someone tell me if any game resource file exists for these tables? I tried to look up the .2DA files in NearInfinity, but could not find anything like this.

    Hey @Rik_Kirtaniya! Sure, you can! I'm glad if anything I posted can be useful. Thanks for asking and for contributing to the IWD wiki!

    I don't think there's any file that controls how Turn Undead works (likely hardcoded). There wouldn't be any need for 2da tables just listing the levels though. Those can be found directly on the creatures files.

    I've not dabbled with the game for a while now but if memory serves (4 years, damn!), I just did a check for all Undead creatures and extracted their level. I obtained the other parameters by applying the game rules. I also did some testing to make sure the game worked accordingly.

    I hate those undead tables. The way they scuttle around on those woodworm riddled legs and watch me without having any eyes.

    Even worse are the Ikea undead, because you have to put them together and THEN they attack you.

    I'll admit that I tried to come up with some pun about turning the tables on those pesky undead

    Added these tables to the IWD Wiki. They will be one of the greatest treasures of the Wiki! :smiley:

    Sorry for the necro, but are these tables still accurate, or have they been "patched" (AKA changed for no reason)?

    Just asking because I'm in Trials of the Luremaster right now and my Level 17 Lawful Good Cleric does absolutely nothing to Revenants and Skeleton Warriors - which should be destroyed at levels 15 and 17. They are not even turned, much less destroyed.

    Game Version is icewind_dale_enhanced_edition_2.5.17.0_(23121) from GOG.

    Edit: Blast Skeletons(17) and Boneguard Skeletons(15) are properly destroyed btw. in the same area. So it's not a generic issue with turning undead.

    Skeleton Warriors and some Revenants have Immunity to Turn Undead - for whatever reason.
    Nothing to do with the Turn Undead table.
  • ThufirHawatThufirHawat Member Posts: 2
    I would say if an undead monster has immunity to Turn Undead - it has very much to do with the Turn Undead Table that states it can be turned and destoyed ;)

    Hi, I will like to clarify a point you've made.

    Undead are actually not harder to turn in insane or HOF mode, just harder to kill if you're purely reducing their HP.

    The reason being, HOF (and insane) mode adds HP to the original HP of monsters, not increase their Hit Dice.

    The difference of these two is as follows (examples)

    Increase HP ---> adds another 100+ HP to the original HP of the goblin.

    Increase Hit Dice ---> instead of rolling 3x6 for HP, the goblin now rolls 20x6 for his HP.

    So since turn undead are based on the undead's hit dice, not total HP, one can destroy undead in normal mode as easily as in HOF mode. Which is why an invisible high level cleric turning undead is so powerful in HOF mode. That 500+ HP greater mummy can be easily destroyed since its Hit Dice are still the same as normal mode.

    A very simple example of how HOF mode affects enemies HP is this. When you fight those goblins in easthaven, you will realised their HP is like 200+ in HOF mode. Yet, sleep spell still works on them. If HOF modes did increase their Hit Dice, then sleep should not be able to affect them at all. So it's evidence that HOF modes ADDS HP, and not increase Hit Dice.

    That is why, spells and abilities that rolls against HD works so well in HOF modes. Enemies HD never change, yet you're super high level by now.

    @Reklawenalp
    No, HoF/LoB gives creatures +12 to every level, in addition to a 3x + 80 HP modifier.

    Neither Sleep, Cloudkill (instead death part), and the Death spell work against the Goblin's in Kuldahar Pass in HoF.

    Unfortunately the rest of their lore doesn't fit - it makes them look like they were chosen simply for their immunity to turn undead.
    It also doesn't help that, right or wrong, "Skeleton Warrior" is a generic undead in the BG games, with no turn undead immunities, which can be summoned as needed with Animate Dead.

    I haven't done testing on other monsters yet, but I can say that the numbers for Drowned Dead at least are incorrect. I've a level 12 cleric at the moment and she has been turning Drowned Dead despite the chart stating that level 13 is required to do so.

    By the way: does the level of one's cleric make any difference beyond simply being able to turn or destroy undead? For example: would a level 13 cleric have any easier time turning Wailing Virgins than a level 12 cleric?
  • jmerryjmerry Member Posts: 3,882
    Yes, higher levels matter. In any given round, think of it this way: Turn Undead rolls your level plus a random component. If that exceeds the creature's level, the creature is turned. If that exceeds the creature's level plus 5, the creature is destroyed/controlled.

    Exceeding monster levels by more gives you a higher chance of turning/destroying them in any given "pulse" of Turn Undead.

    Very helpful, thank you. A roll of your level plus a random component. Do you know the specifics of the random component?

    No, I don't. I don't know the code, and I don't have IWD specifically either. All I have are observations from the BG series.
    For example, here's the results of 50 rounds of turning in BGEE:
    Level 1 cleric versus level 1 skeleton: turned 15/50 times.
    Level 2 cleric versus level 1 skeleton: turned 16/50 times.
    Level 3 cleric versus level 1 skeleton: turned 39/50 times.
    Level 4 cleric versus level 1 skeleton: turned 50/50 times.

    Not enough to conclude anything definitively ... except that it only takes a few levels past the minimum to reach certain success.

    I've found new research that agrees with your findings. If we cross that with comments from the BG Wiki article, it seems you can turn if Caster Level > Undead Level + 1d4 but that doesn't reconcile with jmerry's tests. It could be interesting to redo the turning tests with a CL of 1 and UL of 2. Then, it should be possible to destroy if Caster Level > Undead Level + 4 but the effective chance is unclear. It could be that the formula is Caster Level > Undead Level + 1d4 + 3 instead. Maybe there's some sort of critical failure/success. But I've no way to verify any of the hypotheses mentioned.

    Edit: I made my own tests in IWDEE 2.6.6:
    • If CL < UL, can't turn
    • if CL >= UL, can turn
    • if CL = UL + 3 then 100% turn
    • if CL < UL + 5, can't destroy
    • if CL >= UL + 5, can destroy
    • if CL = UL + 8 then 100% destroy
    What's left out are the chances in the intervals. If we take the 1d4 hypothesis, that could be:
    • Turn: CL − 1 + 1d4 >= UL
    • Destroy: CL − 1 + 1d4 >= UL + 5
    If CL = 4 and UL = 1, for 100% turn: 4 − 1 + 1d4 >= 1 + 3 is always true
    If CL = 9 and UL = 1, for 100% destroy: 9 − 1 + 1d4 >= 1 + 8 is always true

    All values in the table are actually 100% chance but with a negative offset of 1.
