Admittedly, as is the case with most conjuration spells, it has a lot of uses in pen and paper. You can use it for starting a fire, cooking, getting stucked rings out of fingers, as a moisturizer, or maybe lubrication...for stuff. Compare to magic missile which you can only target to a living creature to damage, and not even spesific parts.
Use it for cooking?
"Man this boar looks delicous. HEY NED! Do you have Grease memorized?"
"What? No, why would I?"
"SIIIIIIGH.... now we have to wait *EIGHT HOURS* before you can memorize it and use it to cook this stupid boar. THANKS NED."
"Oh gee how about I use my current slot to magic missile your ass?"
"Yeah try it..."
*eight hours later*
"Okay Ned, now cast grease so we can prepare the meat."
"Got it..." *casts grease*
"EXCELLENT! Now then... crap we don't have anything to start a fire with. Ned, cast flame arrow or something."
"What?! I don't have any flame spells memorized..."

Lol that's funny. I hope you don't give off an example of the lubrication use, though. Trying to keep the forums clean and safe and all.
On a more related note, in bg2 I discovered that grease effect lasts for the entire duration of the spell! This means if a high enough caster's grease spell effects you only once, you get slowed for the whole duration, even if you make saves and leave the area of grease. A lvl 20 bard can keep things slick and slippery for a very long time. Ofcourse, the enemies must fail a save vs spells with +3 bonus which has a low chance of working, but hey we have seen chromatic orbs work too.
I think it is the same as in iwd, one failed save, and greased for ten or more rounds depending on your caster level. Only difference is the grease is purple (?) has a smaller radius (which is bad) but has a save vs spell with no bonus (which compensates for its smaller radius, the grease is layered thicker in a condensed area, I guess)
I've just done a couple of tests in BG2 and it looks like it works quite differently now. I cast Grease twice on my high level party, the first time Minsc moved very slowly and the other 5 just moved at their normal speed. The second time everybody moved at their normal speed. So it looks like if you fail your save you are slowed, and if you pass it you're unaffected.

Really?
Wow. Always thought the Web + Grease combo was like the most obvious low level spell combo in the BG and IWD games.
