Hello everyone.
Always played rpg games, but it is the first time that play baldur's gate (in this case, bg: ee). Also, do not know the rules of D & D, since my social phobia always prevented me from playing pen and paper rpg. What can motivate more to play! On the other hand, what else discourages me is the fact that all classes that interest me look weak, useless, or not recommended for beginners, as pure mage, bard, or sorcerer... Have a nice day!
P.S. Sorry for the bad English.

One tip is to focus on spells like sleep, blindness, and grease to begin instead of direct damage spells. You will meet other characters along the way that will be stronger in melee.
Of course if you find it overly difficult, you can always ask here or start as something easier, like a fighter or paladin and save your mage for later when you know the game better.
Good luck! Don't let any gibberlings push you around
Edit. It seem I don't know how to tag someone with a space in their name.
While you might have a bit more difficulty in the game if you go with a caster things get better as the game moves along. And remember you will be picking up companions along the way, many of whom have more melee oriented classes. So, you'll get the chance to try everything, depending on who you choose to travel with.
Arcane spellcasters are powerful. Do not hesitate to choose such a class.
One important point is that BG npcs are well designed and can cover most roles. You can even play the game with a totally inefficient pc, your friends will get the job done.
Therefore even if your initial mage is weak, you should be able to progress without using specific strategies or tactics.
I just want to point out that:
1) Don't read too much into debates about character classes from forums and guides. They tend to focus on powergaming efficiency and "optimal play", which is not at all necessary to complete the game. Yes some characters are stronger than others, but all of them are useful to an extent, so take whatever you enjoy.
2) Don't shy away from spellcasters. (Although I would avoid a sorcerer for a very first playthrough.) Your main character will have up to 5 companions to help him along the way, so it's no big deal even if he/she is ineffective for parts of the game. If you carry on your adventure into BG2, you need to learn the magic system anyway, and whether you have mage NPCs or a mage charname, you'll be learning magic regardless. It might seem daunting at first, but magic in BG is tonnes of fun!
3) This is the most important point... Avoid Walkthroughs! If you get stuck, just ask questions in the forum, we have a very helpful and friendly community here.
Gather your party and venture forth!
Thank you all for the feedback, much appreciated.
Really, I must keep in mind that the fun is first and play with a class which i want.
P.S. Wilbur, not thought of that when i created the username. Thanks for the comment, sorry I can not edit it...
You'll certainly like being here!
