detect illusion

for the thief, how do the mechanics of this work? can it expose enemies hiding in shadows? if so, does it check against their hide in shadows value?
frankly, I never actually saw this work in game, and I was using a thief with detect illusion score of over 90.
testing it in the palace area of dorn's deep. my thief never detected a single hidden thief, ever. not even waiting minutes in a place I knew there were thieves hidden.
I suspect it either doesn't work for hidden creatures, and only works for magically invisible things, or else it's just plain broke.
any others with experience using it?

-All illusion spells used by enemy spell casters: Mirror Image, Blur, Invisibility, Improved Invisibility, Shadow Door.
-It works only when searching for traps. But there is a neat trick. Pause game, order your character to attack the enemy, and then press search traps. When unpaused your char will go attack the target AND actively check for traps/illusions at the same time! Ordering another attack will cancel it, though.
-It takes approximately one round, in other words, when the skill is active, it makes a single check in any given round. Example:You have %25 detect illusions, you have %25 chance of dispelling an enemy illusion for one round of checking. Basicaly, when you hit %100, you guarantee to dispel an illusion in one round of checking.
Note that the range is rather poor, you must be very close to the target for it to work. So I use my strategy above, attack the mage in melee and detect illusions at the same time.
-it works n heavy armour

"Detect Illusion (by original design) worked against anything flagged as an illusion in its file--think stuff like the spells Mirror Image, Invisibility, etc. but not hiding in shadows."
So I guess it's still the case. I've witnessed it too in BG1&2EE. This is why you can't detect a hidden thief with it.
