Gorion's death doesn't make sense?

I just started replaying BG1 again and there's something about Gorion's death that has been bothering me.
How can a wizard of his stature not cast any defence spells when he is soloing a group of enemies? I mean, come on, not even a mirror image? Even an amateur mage will cast at least a mirror image or blur. It's either Gorion was so full of himself that he doesn't bother learning any defence spells or perhaps since they were rushing through the night and hadnt have the chance to rest and hence no memorised spells. What do you guys think?

And Tamoko casts Dispel on him(the actual Dispel spell, so it has a chance to dispel, heh.)
And, on top of that, Sarevok lands the...
DEATHBRINGER
So Gorion shouldn't have bothered with his lousy defenses in the first place.
Gorion should've probably installed SCS...
He casts Stoneskin and another Mirror Image toward the end.
Besides, Gorion probably hasn't been in a battle in close to 20 years, since he's been baby-sitting PC. He's very rusty, out-leveled, out-numbered, and probably did not prepare appropriate spells. The fight should take a bit longer I'd say, but the outcome shouldn't be in question, Gorion is hugely outclassed, AND he needs to buy PC time to run a few hundred feet before taking a nap to wait for Imoen. Which clearly isn't the bigger 'WTF, BG!' moment, that Sarevok just ignores you after killing Gorion.
Sarevok: Nah Tamoko, we need to leave... I'm clearly at Injured status, and who knows what tricks that level 1 Bhaalspawn that ran a couple hundred yards is capable of! Heck, what if he's a powergamer and re-Imported!?
Tamoko: But... I'm a cleric, I can heal you? Remember?
Sarevok: WHO'S INCHARGE OF THIS CRAZY CULT!? We are letting (Charname) escape so he can doggedly track us down and get reveng- erm, I mean be killed later by my minor hirelings and allies. FFS woman, I hired TARNESH! Dude is a real jerk! He casts Horror! And Magic Missile! Those are really good spells vs a level 1 party damnit!
Tamoko: Why doesn't he just cast sleep?
Sarevok: ...Just come on.
*whispered* "Last time I follow a leader who dumpstats wisdom..."
Edit: I didn't read @DreadKhan post before making my own. He said the same thing but MUCH more eloquently
BGEE's version of Gorion makes much more sense, but Saravok's deathbringer is really overkill.
edit: oops, wrong thread!
Protection from magical weapons- ignore high level warrior for a bit.
Zap ogres who have normal weapons.
Fireball archers who can disrupt you
Then...crap, the cleric got rid of Prot. Panic and throw the first spell that comes to your mind. Get cleaved in two.
Up until the panic he was ok.
Edit: I just realized my mistake in asking this. Next someone is going to quote from the Baldur's Gate novel hehe.
