Newbie help... The Missing Caravan

I got the beginning quest to find the Missing Caravan, killed the Ogre, returned the contract back to the fishmonger, but when I go talk to Hrothgar, all I tell him is "I haven't gone looking for it yet"... what am I missing?

He is in a house between Hrothgars and the inn.
Clicked the caravan
Clicked all 3 boxes
Cleared all enemies, have contract
Returned to Hrothgar first
Still won't let me complete it... I'm baffled
Outside of the cave, there's an invisible "proximity trigger" on the ground in sight of the broken-down caravan – which is like an undetectable trap, except that instead of hurting you, it sets the global variable "Caravan_Quest" to the value 2 when you step on it. Here is how NearInfinity shows it:
Then inside the cave, there's another proximity trigger on the ground in sight of the supply crates, that sets Caravan_Quest to 3 when you step on it:
Now when you report back to Hrothgar, the available dialog choice depends on the value of the Caravan_Quest variable.
If Caravan_Quest is between 1 and 3, then Hrothgar will ask:
"Ah, good... you've returned. What news of the caravan from Caer-Dineval?"
- If Caravan_Quest is exactly 1, you can only say:
- If Caravan_Quest is exactly 2, you can instead say:
- If Caravan_Quest is exactly 3, you can instead say:
The second and third one both end the quest, but the third one gives more XP."No news, I'm afraid. I haven't gone looking for it yet."
"I came across the caravan just outside of town. It looked as if it had been attacked some time ago. There were no survivors and no sign of the supplies."
"I came across the caravan just outside of town. It looked as if it had been attacked some time ago by orcs. I tracked the orcs to a nearby cave and paid them back for their butchery. The caravan's supplies are safe within the cave."
Both set Caravan_Quest to 4, so that you can't have that same dialog with Hrothgar again.
(Killing the Ogres to get the caravan contract, is only needed for Gaspar's quest, not Hrothgar's.)
I just tested it with IWD:EE v2.5, and it worked as described.
Now, as for why some people in this thread have reported it not working... I don't know, so here are a few wild guesses:
- Is there a glitch in the engine that causes proximity triggers to be unreliable?
- Have you somehow managed to enter and exit the cave without stepping on the trigger? (e.g. travelling using the teleport cheat instead of walking? :P)
- Have you found a way to somehow do things out of order and get Caravan_Quest set to 4 prematurely?
- Have you installed a mod that might mess with it? (e.g. possibly the Tweaks component that removes all traps?)
- Are you sure you haven't completed the quest yet, and that it isn't Hrothgar's follow-up task (bringing a supply list to Pomab) that your party is currently on?
In any case, you can check the current value of the Caravan_Quest variable by entering this into the cheat console: Or to set it to your liking before talking to Hrothgar again:I have never experienced this bug, but I will try this game again soon. Just need to roll my characters up.
I intend to play with all characters with good alignment as i always do.
