Discharge of static electricity

In the Temple of Forgotten God one of Acolytes casted Static Charge. He didn't see any of my characters because my thief who attacked him with a bow already fled from his line of sight. Then I continued to attack the Acolite with my thief, firing arrows and retreeting without being seen. All this time one of my other characters, invisible due to spells, stood not far away from that place, so that I could see all the Acolyte's moves.

And then I saw this:

The character who stood invisible next to the Acolyte was just annihilated in a second.

Is it an intended behavior?

I'm attaching a save after that - there're many other Acolytes in the hall, so you can easily reproduce this: let an Acolyte cast Static Charge, flee from him, so that he doesn't go after you (for example, do as I did, attacking with a bow and retreating, or go to the previous level), then return, move an invisible NPC next to this Acolyte and wait till the "Discharge of static electricity"

@bengoshi - The spell doesn't target an enemy (the target is the caster). AFAIK, if your character is in the area of effect, they can be hit, even if invisible, just like standing in the AoE of a fireball.

The 42 base damage looks right. Static Charge does 2d8 + 1d8 per level of the caster (save for half). It's a 4th level spell (i.e., 7th level caster), so a minimum of 9d8 damage. 9 * 4.5 = 40.5, so 42 is right about average damage if you fail your save.

The thing I don't get here is the bonus damage. Did you have some effect/item that was providing -100% electrical resistance?

I can confirm that invisible creatures in the AoE can be affected when the spell goes off. I had my thief, Teri, invisible, hang out near the Acolyte after he had cast Static Charge until it discharged again. Teri took 37 damage and 22 damage, but the latter was on a successful save, so the base damage was 44. I did not see the bonus damage your character got hit with.

Good to know. The damage has come from the Insane difficulty.

Where does one find such awesome custom portraits?

@Elvenblade - All but #2 are from Pillars of Eternity. I did recolor the shirt for #6, from grey to purple. Severn is a bard and needed some color.

#2 is from @artastrophe's portrait pack. It's an alternate version of Gavin (with red hair).

Static Charge is one of the best spells in IWDEE (as it was in the original game). I cannot count how many times I would send the invisible druid in with a Static Charge up and just wait while enemies would stand there getting electrocuted and not knowing why.

I had the idea of applying that effect to a suit of plate mail (appropriately named after Tesla, of course) that also gave protection from electricity but I never got around to it.

In EE a discharge counts as an attack I'm pretty sure so you lose invis.

It has been a while since I last played IWDEE so I will have to double check on that; you could be correct and my information could be out of date.

Well, what do you know? It doesn't work that way any more. Phooey. Still...Static Charge is a great spell and very useful.
