The problem is....in PnP multiclasses CAN have a kit. Just one though, because it represents a greater specialization in that area and you aren't capable of splitting your attention between 2 specializations of that magnitude. Dual-classing is the same. Maintaining your kit's training, even if you're no longer leveling it up, prevents specialization in another area. Though if your first class didn't have a kit, there's no reason to stop you from taking one for your 2nd class.
So yes...nothing in the official rules to prevent it. (Source, most of the Complete Class (except the warrior guide; Druid, ranger, rogue all specifically allow it) guides, where the all the kits are found).
Also specialist mages should NOT be considered a kit (BG1 had it right, they're a separate class entirely from a plain mage) (wild mages ARE however a kit).
A multiclass X/mage could be a X/Wild Mage, but not an X/Specialist (except gnomes). That IS forbidden in the rules. But a Dual-class isn't restricted like that, they could take a kit for class one, then dual into a specialist mage if they wanted too.
And while we're on the Subject, add Druid/Mage, Fighter/Druid/Mage, and Ranger/Druid as multiclass options for half-elves. And yes, there is no alignment conflict, it's official errata (#100 Dragon magazine) that Neutral Good is acceptable for a Ranger/Druid, and ONLY a Ranger/Druid.
Leave as... Multi Class is more powerful than single class. The xp is the only thing slowing them down. Two kits dual class! No. You will make things to easy... Everyone will be Kensia/wildmages...
I would not touch Wild Mage with a...thirty-nine and a half foot pole, sir. Even if it were allowed, I would not even consider it. I don't see the attraction...
But only if first class is not a kit. I always dualled Imoen to a Specialist Mage in BG1. It would be fun to have a vanilla Fighter dualled to an Assassin, Swashbuckler, Specialist Mage or Cleric kit.
Separately, I would also like to see more dual/multi class options (I know sounds a little 3E). Allow the Barbarian, Monk, Bard, Paladin and Sorcerer some sort of combinations. The Sorcerer should certainly be allowed any Mage combo and the Barbarian should be allowed any fighter combo. And while we're at it, let's allow races to be more classes. It just makes sense to have an Elven Druid or Ranger, a Halfling Bard and Half-Orc Monk. OK, maybe not the Monk...
I agree that if your first class wasn't kitted, perhaps you should be able to kit what you dual to. I also agree that perhaps Bard and Barbarian (and maybe Sorcerer) deserve some multiclass action. I don't know about Paladin or Monk though.
