Over the years I feel like I've gone from the full bore "cheese bearded munchkin" to more of a cheese connoisseur. That is picking and choosing certain types of cheese that I think go well together.

So, for example, I don't usually take both the shield of Balduran and the cloak of refelection but I have picked one (I guess the cloak is more powerful). I no longer exploit the merchant in the sewers - though I might on a Bard solo run through. I'm willing to roll for a good long time to get uber stats (my goal is a 92 though I find 88 hard enough to get most of the time). This gets boring and I would actually accept a mod that just gave me 92 with a random 18/xx for STR (with Ctrl-8 you always get 18/100 even if you don't spend all the stat points).

So I admit to some ripe cheese, but I do still turn my nose at other cheese.

So where do other people see themselves? I can see a range from "lactose intolerant: I avoid cheese and vomit every time I unknowingly consume it" to "cheese lover: I like it all old cheese and new cheese".

How do mods factor in?

I haven't dared try SCS yet as I don't think my cheese palate is well enough developed for it =D

I drown myself in cheese until I can take no more. Then, when I tire of the flavor, I move on to the next one.

It allows me to experience a lot of weird new things, without growing dependent on them.

@FredSRichardson I'd advise you to take the plunge and give SCS a whirl. It really does feel like a whole new game!

@FredSRichardson You might want to look at BG2Tweaks if you haven't already. There is a minimum stats tweak which sounds like something you would be interested in.

@Pteran - Okay, I'm still play testing the Road, but when it reaches it's end I will think about a new game with SCS.

@decado - I think I might have used this before because I wanted to learn scrolls without fail, get max HP on level up and I wanted to get the all the strongholds that matched my multiple classes. Appropriate for this thread I think =D

But I'm a bit worried on how well these mods will interact with BGEE and BG2EE, any ideas on this?
  • moody_magemoody_mage Member Posts: 2,054
BG2Tweaks works perfectly with all the EE's, Icewind Dale EE included. In fact it's still being developed and is actually more just EETweaks now rather than BG2 specific.
  • PteranPteran Member Posts: 388
Like Decado said, Tweaks is perfectly compatible with any of the EE games. SCS doesn't work with IWD unfortunately, but it works with the whole BG saga.

    Very nice!

BTW, here's an interesting fact. The probability of a generic Human with all min stats of 3 of rolling 92 or greater is 1 in 100,000. The probability of a Human Bard rolling 92 or higher is a little less than 1 in 100. That comes from three min stats of 12, 13 and 15.

The problem with the BT2Tweaks min stats hack is that you can't min-max =P So, a setting of 12 means no stat can be less than 12. With a roll of 92 you can max 3 stats and have 2 points left over (and the odds are 4 in 100 that you roll 92 or higher, not bad but it drops off quickly to less than 3 in 1000 to roll 94 or higher).

As an alternative, I wouldn't mind setting the min STR, DEX and CON to 14 for everyone. All my CHARNAME's look like they go to the gym a lot =P (this would give a > 2 in 100 chance of 92 or higher)

For me, its not wine and cheese, its cheese or whine.

On the subject of always rolling a 92, check out the UI modding tutorial in the release notes:

Depending on the class I roll, I have been known to re roll for 3+ hours waiting for a 93 or better. Despite playing since release, I'm not super good at the EE games, though part of that may be me passing up optimal equipment for rp reasons. I give particularly difficult encounters about ten attempts, then I pour on all the cheese I can muster.
  • FredSRichardsonFredSRichardson Member Posts: 465
    @BillyYank - that ... is ... awesome ... !!!

@thedamages - I'm with you, I find myself rolling over and over... I think @BillyYank has given us a solution. It's worth a few hours time hacking the UI to save so many hours later on!

Now maybe if I can learn to play through BGEE a little more efficiently - the game is burning through so much of my life =P

Actually @Dee gave us the solution. Take a look at this thread: https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/48994/the-new-ui-system-how-to-use-it
@Freche made a variation to Dee's design that shows the rolls as they go by.

I'm a cheese-ist. I just can't seem to help but like certain types of cheese and hate others. I admit to having a problem, but as long as you the stay the #$%@ off my lawn I'm willing to be civil, objective and professional.

    pallet

It's palate. Yes, I'm also a grammar nazi. Don't you judge me.

@FinnTheHuman - I tend to whine when there's no cheese "Hey! Who nerfed Balduran's shoulder pads! Change them back! Gaaaah!"

I admit I'm homophonically challenged. But, there's no (or hopefully very little) judging in this thread, so I changed it!

True story: right after I set it to 92, I tried setting it to 108, and my computer locked up for five minutes while it rolled in the background... before I force-quit the application and re-lowered my standards. ;)

Personally, I find the version I ended up with at the end of that tutorial (the one in the last screenshot, that says "Cheater!" on the screen) to be the most interesting one. I took away the + and - buttons, which had the exciting effect of making rerolls meaningful despite having a fixed "total".

So, cool story, I was achievement hunting in BG:EE and rolled a throwaway character, level 1 Inquisitor to make him fall to get the achievement, and rolled this on my second roll:

@Dee - Hah! Well the probability of rolling 108 are extremely low. 4.44089e-16 to be not quite exact. That's actually a lot of operations - a petaflop is 1e+15 floating point operations per a second. So, yeah, you computer might hang on this operation (hmm... but maybe for a few minutes...)

Current I have... took awhile to get it to roll up. Req is 95 points. I sat there stunned when I saw my first 90 pop up and went *how high can I get* I stopped there.

Edit: And no. That's not a shadow keeper or any kind of edit. Pure role off char creation. Took about 15 mins of tapping reroll. (Fie on the editors, play it glitches and all!)

Edit edit: Droid phone too version too.

Editx3: I almost feel cheese using him. But he's a legit roll so I don't feel too bad... and I can't meta game since the last time I played this was on Pc back when integrated pentium 3 processors were the bomb so I can't remember half the stuff.

I had to.... I'm gonna try a black guard solo and 6 reroll in... this hits...... Droid phone no hax..... *drools*

Ended with this. Keeping Imoen till out of dungeon. Yoshi for swap and only a single npc for quests. Ai off.

Stat allocation as such... wish me luck:

Definitely feeling.cheese on this roll...Edit. .. not sure what the heck to spec for weapons in....

2hd ofc. .. gotta go that... katana maybe and sword n board?

Marble cheese!!! ( cheddar and mozzarella ) lol

But common 92 only takes roughly like 20 mins to roll out, and that's on a human. Okay more like 10mins, but I must admit I missed 2 92s prior to that, so my bad there.

Also isn't 8 int bad for dealing with mind flayers...would that blackguard get his brains eaten so fast?
  • FredSRichardsonFredSRichardson Member Posts: 465
@Aewyrven - wow, awesome rolls! Yeah, 8 int may not be great. If you were playing BGEE, you could drop wis down by 3 (since you get three books). A 98 thought, good lord, I'll have to check the min stats for a blackguard to see how hard that roll is to get.

The highest I rolled on this game was a 97:

A 98 is hellish to get, imho @FredSRichardson
Most often, people keep their rolls when they get a 91-92, no more

Im concerned for that blackguards brains if hes going through bg2

Don't the stronger mind flayers have like 4 attacks per round too....Id make sure to have some kind of Protect against magic weps. That's supposed to help.
  • FredSRichardsonFredSRichardson Member Posts: 465
@Moonheart - It's interesting, but the min-stats have a pretty big impact on rolls. So a Bard can do pretty well on the first 40 rolls or less. I'm not sure if being a half-elf also lifts some of the minimums.

@marzbarz - skeleton summons might do pretty well against mind flares (high level ones much just tear through them though). I guess sucking down a potion of mind focusing or genius or whatever might also help.
  • FredSRichardsonFredSRichardson Member Posts: 465
Okay, a few more bits of cheese: I drop the difficulty setting down to normal before leveling or memorizing spells. The ease-of-use mod can also take care of this for any difficulty setting.

Definitely makes a difference. Elves must have Min 8 Charisma. Half-Elf only needs 3. Given the benefits of Negative Plane Protection for entire party from Limited Wish, Elves [mostly thinking of F/M or F/M/T] will be relatively handicapped with lower Wisdom stats.

The massive amount of stealing near the beginning of the game using the 4 long-lasting Potions of Master Thievery so easily acquired [Galoob, Lady Yuth, Jayes, Gaelan Boyle's merchant, Gorch, Bernard] is a weakness in the game's conceptual balance methinks. But I always go for it, usually with a detailed "shopping list".

Anyhow... It hardly makes sense for those potions to last 3 hours while the Negative Plane Protection spell lasts @4rounds!!!

So I guess I would really rather have beefier quests with some hefty payouts, probably extending the Lehtinan/Hendak rivalry and potions that only last 1 hour, suggesting a specific use rather than general crime spree. Put me down for a nice Stilton with some 10yr old Port wine.

  • AewyrvenAewyrven Member Posts: 228
I think he is immune since he's a blackguard to the brain eating. (Permanent negative plane protection). Not sure. I took wisdom because I thought paladins eventually got Priest spells?

Ah well. I can get in the mid 90s usually after about 5 mins or so clicking. The 98 was pure fluke and sadly I was drunk while doing it so his weap choices are mentally challanged. Oh well.
