Time and time again Beamdog has listened to the fans' feedback.
After the first beta UI we got the UI from the release version, heavily inspired by ideas shared on this very forum. And it will be improved in the future.
And now, the black map borders, another "hot" subject from the 2.0 update, will be made optional with the next patch.
Yay. I don't mind the black borders (and kind of miss them now that I am playing the original versions while waiting for my new video card) but I am glad that people who do not like them have an option to not deal with them.
Hopefully the sprite issue will be similarly handled. I don't mind the sprites at all, but clearly it's an issue for a significant number of people.
It's a bit off topic, but the scaling method is something we are planning to make optional (though I can't speak to how it will be toggled--in game or through baldur.lua--or when it will be implemented--in 2.2 or a later update).
